The sad truth is that Celine's over-the-top brand of schmaltz should slot in pretty well with those corny Olympic opening ceremonies.

That said, it's too bad that the organisers couldn't have made a ballsier choice.

A lot of things, almost as many as what's wrong with Celine Dion.

There's so many great Canadian artists that would be better: Nelly Furtado, Metric, hell even Rush would rock the house in way that Celine wouldn't even come close to.

She's a well-known personality, and as someone already pointed out, she's showy/glitzy, which is what the opening ceremonies are all about.

So is Neil Young, and he's much less annoying. Don't need glitz for the olympics.

Many in this thread might not like Celine, but many do, she is Canada's best selling music export and one of the most critically acclaimed. I think she was a good choice and a choice that fits the event.
