kenmore kenmore:
The Harper government knew, but tried to keep secret since last spring, allegations that the governor of Kandahar was personally involved in torture and abuse of detainees.
Government documents detailing the accusations were heavily censored by the government which, claiming national security, blacked out the references to “the governor.” But multiple sources, both inside and outside the government, confirm that the words “the governor” have been censored as have whole passages referring to secret cells allegedly run by Mr. Khalid outside the official prison system
hmmm.... another tory coverup... what a bunch of liars!
It may well be a cover up but it is on a need to know basis that such issues are discussed to begin with. The important part I find in this discussion is the issue of trust. How are we to garner support from our tepid allies if this is the way we deal with the mundane routine of prisoner transfers and detainee management? This stuff is our dirty laundry and if we can't handle the small stuff then who are we to tell anyone else how to do it? It may not seem like such a big deal if your already committed but to the people who are not on side it is everything and how much care we put into handling it will pay dividends and the inverse is true in spades as well. That is certainly something to be furious about.
