For Pete's sake. I know Remembrance day is big in Canada along with Poppy wearing. Rightfully so. At the same time you're a freaking Hockey show. Keep the politics to a minimum. If you want to be an political op-ed type go to the news desk or get a political show.

If you are going to go on a political rant as a sports caster then yes expect to get fired.

$1:
'It's just hurtful': Don Cherry's comments shake Edmonton hockey community

Mohammed Hussain is a proud hockey dad to his three kids.

He's also a first-generation Canadian.

"I never had a chance to experience hockey … I am extremely happy and fortunate that my kids have the opportunity to enjoy it," he said in an interview Monday.

He and his family always tune in to watch the Edmonton Oilers play, and he said he's been watching commentator Don Cherry ever since he arrived in Canada 25 years ago.

On Saturday night during Coach's Corner, Cherry made comments that prompted Sportsnet to cut ties with him on Monday afternoon.

"You people ... you love our way of life, you love our milk and honey, at least you can pay a couple bucks for a poppy or something like that," Cherry said Saturday night. "These guys paid for your way of life that you enjoy in Canada, these guys paid the biggest price."

Coach's Corner and Hockey Night in Canada are broadcast on CBC in a sub-licensing deal with Rogers Media, which owns Sportsnet.

Hussain said the comments were shocking and offensive.

"Frankly, as a person of colour I'm just tired, Just tired of people otherizing us," he said. "In a few breaths, someone like Don Cherry just essentially alienates us. It's just hurtful," he said.

Over the weekend, Cherry's comments came up at the rink in discussions with other parents. Hussain said there was a shared sentiment that Cherry needs to walk away.

Its a shame it ended this way for him. The man had been doing HNIC since 1982.

I kind of think that's the way he wanted it. Blaze of glory instead of quietly out to pasture... ...either way, not a surprising turn of events.

I don't know if the nation of Colin Kaepernick and Megan Rapinoe gets to criticize other countries for politicizing sport.

As to this:

Good for him, CBC, but did he buy a poppy :?:

Don't get me wrong, I love Don Cherry and applaud his support for the troops and veterans but the real issue here isn't him it's that, the CBC and then Sportsnet allowed him to use the program to air his grievances and rants without consequence for decades just so long as he kept pulling in the ratings.

But now that times have changed, and now that corporations are more concerned about virtue signalling and appeasing the woke than allowing free speech or dissenting opinions on their stations for fear of losing the bottom line we're going to see more and more of this "don't speak out and offer dissenting opinions.

So, given today's less than stellar standards requiring political correctness at all levels don't be surprised if you see a new Coaches Corner hosted by two women, Ron Maclean and Cassie Dawin Campbell-Pascall.

Cherry was given the chance to clarify or correct what he said, and he chose not to.

All he needed to say was something like, "I meant EVERYONE who doesn't wear a poppy."

Instead he reitereated that was his opinion and got fired.

Zero sympathy...

Not according to him he wasn't. Not by Sportsnet. Why? Does CBC have some conveniently edited clip, or something?

To show coaches corner repeatedly after Cherry said "you people" shows just how much of a hatchet job this really was. Sportsnet wanted to get rid of Cherry years ago and when hockey fans wouldn't let them they patiently waited till they got the chance to use his poor choice of words to create faux outrage and shit can him. Talk about a duplicitous bunch of assholes.

But here's a thought. If Sportsnet really wanted to be fair, they should hold a poll to see if hockey fans want Don Cherry fired for his comments on Saturday night or not. But we all know that won't happen and if people believe that Don Cherry was fired for calling out people who don't wear a poppy, I've got a bridge in Brooklyn they might be interested in.

I'm just glad for him that he got paid a lot of money by CBC and SN over the years before the inevitable happened. Why should well-connected hideous left-wingers be the only ones to make bank off of a contract with the national network?

I wish that I was a billionaire. I would start "Hockey night in America". I would hire Cherry at twice what he was being paid just to piss of the left! I would give him free reign to say whatever the hell he wanted to. The more he stirs the shit, the better. I would offer incentive related bonuses as well. The more leftys showing up at hospitals suffering from aneurysms within a 24 hour period of his broadcast, the bigger the bonus!
