Which is the opposite of 'Journalism'. In Journalism, the journalist researches and verifies facts before informing the public (or not). The public then determines if those facts are relevant to them. This is how government propaganda takes hold, by letting the public decide what 'truth' is.

I dated a Journalism student, many moons ago. We had long conversations.

The public doesn't have access nor time to dig into a story that holds people of power to account. That's why western countries enshrine these rights in constitutions; because they are crucial to a functioning democracy.

That's Capitalism. If you can offer a product better, why shouldn't you? Newspapers have done little or nothing to adapt to the sea change in information technology that has happened over the last 20 years. Adapt or die.

Quite true. But then again, how do you adapt against Google et. al., when you were running with pretty slim margins for the last 60 years? (And Google is perfectly willing to take all your hard work and make advertising revenue from it)

Obviously papers in little rural towns aren't the New York Times, but they've found a way to thrive in the digital world:

Maybe the way forward for rural papers is to go completely digital and become blogs, vlogs, Facebookg groups or something else along those lines.

They won't be as profitable, but in a decade or two, the idea of holding a physical newspaper in your hand will be as quaint as a typewriter or horse and buggy ride.

Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer says the Liberals’ decision to name an anti-Conservative union to a panel that will decide which media outlets receive government funding is the latest example of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau “stacking the deck” in his favour to get re-elected in October.

In an interview with The Canadian Press Sunday, Scheer said he believes the decision to include Unifor on the panel – which will determine eligibility for a $595-million bailout package – undermines the credibility of the panel’s work.

Which makes me wonder. Can or will the Conservatives kill this giveaway if they win the election.

They will have to rework themselves to survive, and we certainly need them.

A lot of the costs involved in a newspaper is paying the layout people, printing, and delivering the paper. Saving that money may be what they need to survive.

What I said before... a small reduction in numbers might make the rest more profitable, and the quality better.

The Left's social media monopolies, and the corporatist backed alphabet networks seem to be the only fat cats in the game, right now.

And now there are government subsidies for the left.

Elsewhere, Leftosphere media in general is not doing so well. Buzzfeed is shedding jobs. Vice media is getting saved by Soros. Which is the one that had to be bailed out by the Saudis? NY Times? WaPo? Both?

In the meantime the ragtag right is being demonetized, deplatformed and in some cases depersoned by the Internet monopoly and the political left. Yet the media of the right survives, finding refuge with subscriptions, patrons, private advertisers and at the present getting scattered about to the refuges of small, cult media providers like Gab and Bitchute. Yet they're not going away.

Where will it all end? Who knows?
