Maybe the way forward for rural papers is to go completely digital and become blogs, vlogs, Facebookg groups or something else along those lines.
They won't be as profitable, but in a decade or two, the idea of holding a physical newspaper in your hand will be as quaint as a typewriter or horse and buggy ride.

They will have to rework themselves to survive, and we certainly need them.
A lot of the costs involved in a newspaper is paying the layout people, printing, and delivering the paper. Saving that money may be what they need to survive.
