Oh suck it up. It's Hallowe'en ffs, the one day of the year where you're supposed to be able to dress up as something your aren't. Now, I could see it as being in bad taste if his character/costume was supposed to be a "drunken Scotsman".
I could see a problem if a costume reinforced a negative stereotype like the above mentioned costume or say, a "sexy squaw in distress" or dressing as an Arabic person with "explosives" strapped to your chest. What next, can't dress up in drag for Hallowe'en because it might be offensive to transsexuals and actual cross dressers?
First, no, you can't dress up for Halloween in anything that promotes a cultural stereotype...unless you're an asshole looking to stir shit. Like it or not, it's not 1965 anymore.
Second, like I said, it's not racist, just ignorant. We Scots, for example, take the wearing of our tartan seriously. We even have "rules" about who's entitled to wear what. Remember that guy who got charged with dressing up in a Canadian Armed Forces uniform at the cenotaph a couple of years ago? It's exactly the same thing.
No, it's not. Impersonating a member of the military is not the same as wearing some cultural garb on Hallowe'en. And who's this "we" you're talking about? I'm Scottish and frankly could give a good goddam if everyone started wearing a kilt. In fact, many people are wearing it as a fashion statement. I mean shit dude, do you get pissed about Lowlanders wearing the kilt? How about the Irish or Welsh or Cornish? After all, it WAS just an everyday garment when it first appeared.

Jesus man, I never hear this kind of pissing and moaning about Black people with dyed blonde hair. Or Natives wearing denim.
Probably because those have nothing to do with perpetuating stereotypes.[/quote]Either does wearing a fucking kilt, but it sure got your beans in a knot. Remember, it's not about perpetuating stereotypes to these idiots, it's about cultural appropriation. Look at the top picture. How is dressing up as a Buddhist monk "stereotyping"? That's what they look like. At least the ones I've run across anyway. And it's not like Buddhism doesn't cross MANY ethnic and cultural lines.
How is dressing as Viet Cong "stereotyping"? That's what the VC looked like.
Between the right wing Christnuts and the overly sensitive neo-liberal retards, it's a wonder Hallowe'en is still even permitted.
