One cannot assume too much right away. Whether mentally unstable or a hardened foreign operative, the point is the same. He was a terrorist.

Here is the sad part. At least in the short term, they will have achieved their sick goals. Slaughtering innocents and altering peoples behaviours. Will people go out and congregate in large celebration without being wary of the fact they could be attacked? How many will cancel such plans altogether? How many DIDN'T celebrate in France last night because of these fears (which turned out to be well founded)?

You cannot let these cowards win. This is the most challenging and complicated issue facing mankind today. You cannot bow down and change your way of life to allow them to succeed. As a practical matter, these attacks have become normalized, and this is disturbing. You cannot give up, ever. If France loses what made it so great there is a real problem.

10 children among dead in France truck attack- 202 wounded- 84 dead

From MSN:

$1:
Bouhlel zigzagged the white box truck through the crowds, witnesses said, then opened fire on survivors before being shot dead by police. French President François Hollande said at least 50 people remained in critical condition, hanging between “life and death.”

Molins said 10 children were among the dead and that a total of 202 people were injured in the attack. Of those in critical condition, he said, 25 were comatose.

NICE, France — A Tunisian-born émigré with a record of petty crime was behind the wheel of a truck that barreled into Bastille Day revelers and claimed at least 84 lives over a mile-long path of horror, a French prosecutor said Friday, as investigators explored possible links to Islamist militant networks.

The driver was identified as 31-year-old Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel, whose identity documents, cellphone and bank card were found inside the 19-ton truck used in Thursday’s carnage along a palm-lined French Riviera corniche in Nice, according to Paris Prosecutor François Molins, who said that 10 children are among the dead and that 202 were injured, many seriously.

Molins said that Bouhlel had been connected to assault and theft since 2010, but that he had no apparent previous links to extremism and was “entirely unknown” to anti-terror units.

But the probe shifted quickly to determine whether Bouhlel acted alone, or if he had connections and a support network that could be plotting further violence. Bouhlel’s ex-wife had been detained as part of the investigation, the prosecutor said.

The attack has not yet been formally linked to international terrorist networks, Molins said, but it “fits very well in the context of the cause made by the terrorist organizations in various videos and messages.”

I've not been living in a bubble Martin. And that is indeed the one image from this attack that broke my heart.

I guess it's sad that bodies in the street have become so commonplace that it takes an image like that to disturb me.

AFP photographer describes heartbreak of Nice attack aftermath

$1:
Nice (France) (AFP) - AFP's Valery Hache was one of the first photographers to arrive on the scene of the attack in Nice on Thursday night and he captured striking images of the chaos and the truck, its windscreen riddled with bullet holes.

Here is his account of what he found:

"The dread began to fill me when I heard the sirens. Too loud. Then I saw the columns of fire trucks. Too many. Something wasn't right.

It was the evening of the July 14th, France's national day, and I had just spent several relaxing hours shooting the annual fireworks display. Four days earlier, when the month-long Euro football championship ended, all of us journalists breathed a collective sigh of relief.

Throughout the championship, including the final that I covered in Paris, we were all afraid that attackers would strike, so there was always tension.

But nothing happened, so after the final we all left Paris for our respective homes relaxed, looking forward to the summer holiday season. Even the president seemed to validate our tranquility when he announced on July 14, French independence day, that the state of emergency that had been in place since the deadly November attacks in Paris would not be extended.

So on the evening of Bastille Day, I had a pleasant, relaxing time shooting the annual fireworks in Nice. Everyone loves a fireworks display. Especially families with kids. Especially in such a tourist hub. Especially at the height of the summer holiday season. The seaside promenade was jam-packed with people.

I shot plenty of photos but, knowing that the focus is usually always on Paris, sent just one to the desk -- the fireworks with bolts of lightning behind them. Then I went home.

'Pure panic '

Ten minutes after walking through the door of my apartment in the hills overlooking the city, I heard the sirens and saw the fire truck columns. I began to sense that something wasn’t right, grabbed my cameras and headed back to my scooter. A journalist friend called, saying 'something serious has happened on the Promenade des Anglais', the city’s main thoroughfare.

I drove there as fast as I could, then left the scooter and continued on foot.

I walked into a scene of pure panic.

Hundreds of people were running in all different directions. Some were screaming. Some were crying. "Terrorists!" "There are terrorists!" "They are shooting!" "Terrorists in Nice!" I heard gunfire, but didn't know where it was coming from.

I walked, trying to get my bearings, to figure out what was going on. Police were just starting to cordon off the place. I saw a truck, its windshield riddled with bullets, surrounded by police. I stopped and got some shots.

I stayed for only about 10 seconds before moving on. By the time I sent my photos, 15 minutes later, the whole place was sealed off and you couldn’t get anywhere. People were still in panic. Some were hugging. Some were sobbing, walking slowly away. The lucky ones who escaped.

Once I got to the area behind the truck, I saw bodies everywhere. I continued to take pictures, but couldn’t believe what I was seeing in my viewfinder. Bodies strewn all along Nice’s main street.

'Tiny bodies'

Nice is a tourist magnet, not just for foreigners, but for the French as well. There were huge crowds here for the July 14th celebrations.

I am a journalist and we journalists knew there was a risk of this. It was in the back of our minds throughout the weeks of the Euro tournament. But the Euro went off without a hitch and now I found myself in Nice -- touristy, beachy, laid-back Nice! -- and there were bodies everywhere.

Some were tiny bodies. Kids. Their parents must have been so happy to give their kids a treat and bring them to see the fireworks on July 14th. And that’s the heartbreak of it all..."

I was thinking about Israel this morning. They used to have a similar problem with people ramming cars into bus stops about 10 years ago. So they put big concrete and steel posts around the stops. They also post IDF forces nearby, so if anyone take a run at them, they die half a block before they get to the bus stop.

Suddenly, that kind of attack went out of fashion.

In Canada and the US we'd have no end of Quislings arguing that steel posts and armed resistance to terrorism violates the rights of Muslims to kill people. They'd also call you a racist for not wanting to get tortured, mutilated, and beheaded by a Muslim like the martyrs who died at Bataclan.

Israel deals with Terrorism through Intelligence(Mossad) and Military(IDF) operations because they don't F**k around unlike the West who hasn't learned a thing since 9/11.
