What a sad sight to see them just rotting away. A pox on our lousy governments that have our young men and women manning half century old ships!

Not so fast.... the USS Missouri brought down a superior alien vessel manned by only a few crotchety old seadogs.

[quote="Jabberwalker"]Those 280s were so feckin' beautiful when they were new. They were revolutionary design for a brief instant ... the first class of all-gas turbine powered warships. They were also designed and built JUST before the Arab oil crisis and they ended up being relatively expensive to run. The Frigates solved that with two diesels to cruise the world without needing an oiler nearby and two gas turbines to fight with when speed and mkanoever mean survival and success.

The 280's were pigs on fuel, they couldn't go anywhere without a tanker. The frigates only have one cruise diesel.

Aliens have crotchety old seadogs? Wouldn't they be called astrodogs?

The sad state or the CF is reprehensible, but I think it would be in wrose shape under Trudeau and Mulcair. This is my issue and my vote will go to the party that I feel is best for the CF. Still, instead of sounding like a fear-monger, I'll wait until all the parties release their platform and then decide who to vote for.

Sorry, I've only ever been a tourist on a Frigate and they are as hell didn't let me go into the engine spaces (unfortunately). I thought that there are two.

Fuel pigs ... The 280s were built with the idea of the ultimate convoy escort (the big air arm being the main weapon). It was designed by the WWII generation to re-fight WWII. There would always be can oiler nearby. The AORs were built at the same time. I don't think that anyone at the time visualized Canadian warships cruising the globe as loners, although the original vision for the RCN back in Wilfred Laurier's day is more or less what we ended up with ... a fleet of 8 cruisers.

The recent Libyan action a few years back was spearheaded by HMCS Charlottetown. She arrived weeks before, probably collecting Intel and possibly landing commandos. The Libyans even took a pathetic shot at her (first time that a Canadian warship has been fired upon since Korea) when the unloaded a battery of Katucha rockets at her from a vehicle on shore. They are totally unguided and they also landed way short. It probably made some Libyan feel like a hero, though.

"Dreadnaught" ... that's funny. I remember when the Frigates were being built and the NDP types were going on about "battleships". That was the same time in history when Svend Robinson was yacking on about " attack helicopters" for the Navy so that we would go all over the world and "attack" people with them. He never mentioned that the fuzzy, cuddly Search and Rescue helicopters were the same damn helicopters.

What ever happened to Svend?
