It doesn't and I'll bet dollars to donuts the FA never said such a thing either. Serving you an open can isn't just United policy. I've flown numerous times on various airlines, even charter flights, and the flight attendants have always handed me my beverage can already opened. It's called service and it harkens back to the "olden days" when cans still had pull tabs.
