People that poor are more likely to take transit/walk/bike/carpool already and the infrastructure that supports that will inevitably grow over time in reaction to increased prices.

The closest bus stop here is 33km away, I could walk or take a bike but that turns into a 66km round trip everyday. You people that live in a city just have no clue. I guess we just fold up rural Canada and ALL! move to where there is public transit.

Well if you choose to commute to work that far every day then you're chosing to pay for it. You're not entitled to demand that the rest of society pay for it. Life is about choices.

Maybe all the money society is giving Toronto to build their subway system should be directed to Alberta to develop a high speed train between Calgary and Edmonton.

Nor should those who choose not to live in cities like Toronto be forced to pay, so the city peanuckles get cheaper transit.

How do we make drivers pay, whether rural or urban. Drivers get a far great subsidy than transit users. Guess we'll have to go to road pricing, pay by the km. Sounds like that's coming anyway, tho personally I think a carbon tax is the better solution.

So let's remove the subsidy on public transit.

People chose to live in the big City, they can pay for big City services. Pony up.

As long as we go to road pricing for drivers, OK.

We already have that. It's called gasoline excise taxes.

The estimation is that drivers are subsidized $3000 a year on average. So I would guess excise taxes would need to be raised to be enough to pay for roads.

The estimation is that 100% of the time, you're facts are 100% unsubstantiated.

Estimating that people commuting probably spend $50/wk in fuel tax, multiplied by 52 weeks = $2600...that's damn near $3000 per year. So you're estimate is that every driver is responsible for $6000/year in road costs? I don't know the answer, it's not my field, but $6000 seems like too big a number to be correct.

$1:
The Government of Canada collects about $5 billion per year in excise taxes on gasoline, diesel, and aviation fuel[4] as well as approximately $1.6 billion per year from GST revenues on gasoline and diesel (net of input tax credits). The Canada Revenue Agency, a part of the government, collects these taxes.
Collectively, the provincial governments collect approximately $8 billion per year from excise taxes on gasoline and diesel.

If you divide 13 billion (fed and prov) by 10 you get 1.3 bill. Assume that this amount applies to BC (Ontario obviously would get much more, PEI much less). That won't even fund one bridge.

Remember that roads includes all the municipal roads - those are funded by property taxes, municipalities don't get gas taxes.

Actually I did. What have you got? The contention was that excise taxes are sufficient to pay for all roads in Canada. As you can see from the wikki link, they are not nearly sufficient. Not even in the ballpark. If you have numbers that say they are, let's see them.
