Vamp018 Vamp018:
The US/Canada has Freedom of Movement along the Border with each other, ya just gotta know where and when and who lol. Basically if your a Canadian in the US we don't care, your more then invited to come down anytime. It's our pest (Mexico) to the South that is the issue. As for the EU and UK, Sorry I'd only let in Ireland and Anti monarchist UK Born Citizens.

And this is why you are not on the list, rebel scum.  [B-o]

this case,
I always got a kick out of calling Southerners YANKEE when living down there, and calling yankees REBELS when I lived up North... heheh Rebels vs the Crown, and all Yankees compared to Canucks :D

I love my Southern neighbours though! [B-o]

And to Vamp's point, yes, there's always a spoiler in the mix... in this case, Mexico.

...and to all of the scrungy newcomers to the UK that Canada isn't a short cut to Gold Mountain.

True, If you folks do this then Obama gets a decent justification to militarize the border more than he already has.

I've unfortunately come to think that I will never again be able to drive down to visit my friends in the States with just a driver's licence and a smile at the border...

Yep. Those days are over.

Sad that it's now a felony to cross through this gate without a passport and permission:

May as well close the gate and be done with it.

Get an enhanced driver's license and you're still good to go. Seems to me, last time I crossed, they didn't even ask for a driver's license - just what's purpose of your trip, where are you going, how long.

Prior to 9/11 I had an I-94, which was a temporary work permit for the US that I had to renew every year. In order to qualify I needed local police criminal clearance which I then took to US Customs to apply for their criminal clearance and issuance of the I-94. At the time I also had RCMP criminal clearance as well as Govt of Canada security clearance.
Crossing the border at Windsor/Detroit was simply a matter of flashing my licence and I-94 and I was basically waved through.
After 9/11 they refused to renew my I-94 and rejected a fresh application the following year.

ps. We didn't do that. It was that famous 9/11 "Canadian Connection" that did that. Our border services reciprocated with the passport requirement for Americans coming this way. It was a tit-for-tat response. I'm not sure how much illegal traffic there is from the U.S. to here ... there is some for sure, as it is often easier to enter the U.S. but harder to stay there. Whatever. It sure kicked the hell out of US tourism here and it sort of runs contrary to history, as well. All of this happened in the wake of the Europeans killing their passport requirements after decades ... centuries of armed border crossings going every which way.

Hell, I remember when crossing the border involved a question about your nationality and destination and then being told to have a good time. We weren't always even asked for ID

We used to drive from Montreal down to a ski mountain in Vermont called J Peak every Saturday morning during the winter ... a car full if twentysomethings and a roof rack full of skis. We'd go through a little border crossing as it was closest, we'd slow down and wave, the US Border guards would always smile back, wave and wave us through! ... didn't even need to stop ... in that direction. One the way home, you had to play twenty questions with the most officious of twits guarding Canada... protecting her from contraband. We made the trip so often that, really, we never had any. We were only there to ski our asses off.
