Punish a student by limiting their ability to learn.

The mandate of every school is to educate. You don't educate by removing students from class.

A non violent non disruptive action shouldn't be met with disproportionate punishment, counter to the objective of the school.

This is just the school getting butt hurt that they lost some revenue for their cash cows, so they made an example.

The school has traded the education of a student to protect the monopoly of their vending machine operator. Corporatism ho!

Yeah, this kid's scholarship to Harvard really got derailed by getting an afternoon's suspension within the first two weeks start of the school year. Maybe to make up for the cosmic unfairness of it all the heroes at Galt's Gulch can arrange some kind of a bursary so he can hone his capitalist skills at the Ayn Rand Business Academy when he graduates.

Oh hell, I can remember when the "standard" punishment for skipping school was a 3 day suspension. Gotta love the logic in that one, "He won't come to school, we won't let him come to school"

I can't remember anyone at all in high school who looked at a suspension as some kind of real punishment. Even the nerds and brainiacs looked at it like a reward. Three day suspension? Whoo-hoo! More like three days sleeping in! Have fun at school, losers, while I get to stay home and hang out with the dog.

We used to call 'em three day passes. A two week suspension was a furlough

I miss high school. It was fun. At age 47 I'm kind of perversely proud to say I'm not much more mature now than I was back then.

If missing a half day didn't matter then we should shorten the school year by a half day.

Punishing students by preventing them from learning is a terrible, counter productive form of punishment.

A much better solution would be a quick chat saying you can't sell on school property because the school board has a contract with a third party provider to establish a monopoly on the sale of drinks in the schools.

But a reasoned reaction would require a level of leadership that's highly unlikely to be found in the education system.

I was selling smokes out of my locker at a very inflated price.
