Normally the celebrity stuff doesn't bother me very much but this one almost feels like losing a kind old friend.

Laughing on the outside. Crying on the inside. His torment finally became unbearable. Ironic that someone who was so sad could make everyone feel happy. A genuine contradiction. As I heard on one news report, "If you feel sad. Tell someone".

All the way back to Mork and Mindy (and playing an alien on Happy Days!), "Throbbing Python of Love", Aladdin, Hook, Good Morning Vietnam . . . Good Will Hunting . . .it definitely feels like losing a good friend.

Yogi Yogi: Laughing on the outside. Crying on the inside. His torment finally became unbearable. Ironic that someone who was so sad could make everyone feel happy. A genuine contradiction. As I heard on one news report, "If you feel sad. Tell someone". He has told people, including discussing it in interviews. He said he had "non-clinical bipolar disorder." I would question the non-clinical part. He also said he thought about suicide once before, when he was drunk, but the rational part of his brain convinced him to wait until he was sober. Maybe this time he was too drunk for the rational brain to kick in. I guess that's the problem with bi-polar, that the depths of depression seem that much deeper because you remember the highs, vs somebody who is uni-polar. The highs are actually the enemy, because they are so seductive. And, for many people, also the source of their inspiration. When that leaves I guess it's crushing. Also the star system feeds the mania in part by the adulation, but in part because being "up" like that is what's expected. To some degree, US society as a whole is addicted to being hypomanic, at least. There's something wrong with you if you're not cheerleader level happy all the time.

Truly a great loss. We lost an incredibly funny man who could make the world laugh. This tragedy should shine a brighter light on mental illness.

Doubt it. We've had many famous people suffer and die from mental illness. We remain in the dark ages about it. Causes, treatment, fear of it, etc.

I still remember him as Mork - one of my fondest moments of that role was when they did the crossover with Happy Days and he stole the Fonz' power.

Actually, Mork used to irritate me. It was the film and especially the stand-up stuff that I liked.

Was he an alien or a devil in that episode, because he played both on two Happy Days episodes?

Was listening to Ched and the host talked about the emails he recieved from publicists of authors who wanted air time to push their books on suicide and depression, wow it's the same as an unnamed website says he took his life because of financial problems. Regardless of your feelings on Robin Williams (and the way he chose to find a permanent solution to his problems), depression and mental illness are real things that no external force can cure. Medicine, hotlines, and people with degrees can only keep your demons away for so long, until how you finally choose to deal with them. Sometimes that means taking your own life. Anybody saying this man is a coward or is going to hell, should really go pay a visit to Oz to see if they have any hearts left over, because you’re the very reason that this type of thing happens. Look, there’s an actual human standing next to you right now. Shake their hand, talk to them, tell them they are not alone. You may find that you aren’t either.Robin Williams and Why Funny People Kill Themselves
