I shot a skunk in a woodshed by a farm house many years ago. That was a big mistake, as it took about 9 months before you could bring wood into the house for the stove (unless you were willing to put up with the stink). It seems that the last thing that the skunk did was empty all of its bunkers ... a sort of haunting, I suppose.

p.s. That happened in Lanark County in Ontario circa 1982 during a period of SERIOUS rabies outbreak. A friend lost a barn full of cats that had been attacked by a rabid skunk, right around that time and a coyote that had tested positive for rabies was shot about a month earlier maybe a 100 yards from the woodshed. We weren't shooting them for fun.

Anybody know how to get rid of skunks humanely?

Most bylaw offices can lend you live traps, and they will come and pick up and relocate the skunks.

That, or a .22 to the base of the skull.

Can't use a .22 unfortunately. That would be the most humane way. But I'll look into the trap proposition--thx.

NP.

Around here, I can call County Animal control, and they'll bring a trap out for cats, skunks, porcupines . . . whatever and they'll check the traps daily unless you call them and say you have a 'guest'. Then they come right away before you even have time to heat water to make soup.

They've had to round up in my area; llamas, alpacas, buffalo and donkeys. Secretly, I want to call them for a trap for a Zebra and see what they say. (there is a farmer nearby with Zebras)

We got one of those traps once to try to catch this poor little skinny kitty. Unfortunately you couldn't see in it. I thought I caught the kitten but when I took the trap in the house and opened the door it was a big wild tom cat. Things got very exciting for a few minutes. :D
