No im not a Yorkie. As I said the school administration has a very liberal and tolerant culture due to its establishment as a refuge from WASP bigotry. That doest mean all the students are tolerant, it means the admin tends to err on the side of accommodation when a request to do so us made.

Of note, its not like the U rubber stamped the students request, the struggled with it, consulted extensively, and ultimately they said the determining factor was that it was an online course, and they would not have granted the request had it been an in class course.

This administration, right?

$1:
Meanwhile, administrators at York University have threatened to sue Jewish groups that announced plans to protest an on-campus address by British MP George Galloway, a high-profile apologist for terror groups such as Hamas and Hezbollah. The university maintained the campus was private property and insisted it would take action against any member of the public who protested Mr. Galloway’s speech. It even urged protesters not to use public spaces near campus for demonstrations because it “might provoke others to disturb the peace.”

This is the same York University, of course, that annually witnesses an anti-Semitic hatefest known as Israel Apartheid week, and which has been accused in the past of providing insufficient protection of its Jewish students from threats and intimidation by supporters of the Palestinian cause.

Hm, a quick google search revealed that York U has had at least two sexual assaults on campus in recent history, the most recent being last September. It does not sound like a friendly place for people with two 'x' chromosomes.

Kind of reminds you of an occupy camp, doesn't it?

On the issue of whether or not the admin contributes to York's rep for the uncool, check this one out, on George Galloway's visit contrasted with Daniel Pipes'.

Basically...

$1:
Christopher Hitchens memorably described George Galloway as “a pimp for fascism.” York has now welcomed Galloway as an honoured guest at one of Canada’s largest universities, even as those who uphold democratic values are shut out.

It isn't just the admin. Student organizations contribute. Have you heard of the free expression ratings that come out each year?

$1:
Taking an average of universities’ policies and practices, the Campus Freedom Index names Carleton University and the University of Ottawa as the worst universities in Canada for free expression. Both Carleton and Ottawa have actively censored student speech, earning D’s for their policies and F’s for their practices.

McGill University and York University do only slightly better, each earning a ‘D’ average.

Three student unions have the dubious distinction of earning straight F’s. The Lakehead University Students’ Union (LUSU), the University of Victoria Students’ Society (UVSS) and the York Federation of Students (YFS)—receive ‘F’ grades for restricting campus free speech through both their policies as well as their practices. These three are the worst student unions in Canada when it comes to campus free speech.

Would it be OK for me to send in my homework over the internet? I really don't want to go to class if I have to sit near any of the blecks or bruns. :?

Meanwhile, every other University is completely safe in a country where something like 95% of women get molested/raped in their lifetime. It's definitely the University's fault, nothing culturally wrong at all.

The problem is the location. York U is in one of the nether-regions of the GTA, right past the outskirts of Toronto proper in what is a pretty depressing and bleak industrial zone. No reason for any citizen to visit or linger in those parts, yet it's close enough to a number of older, run-down neighbourhoods. Criminal's paradise.

Interesting little sidebar with no real point attached. Did you know York was where "slutwalks" began?

$1:
Residents of a York University dormitory huddled in a common area yesterday trying to digest news that two sexual predators had roamed their hallways, stealing into dorm rooms, raping two women and trying to attack a third.

Houry Seukunian, 19, a resident of the 400-person residence, said the scenario is beyond frightening. It's one thing to be nervous about walking down a campus laneway after dark, she said, but quite another to feel unsafe when snuggled into bed.

"I'm scared to go to the bathroom by myself," she said yesterday. "We go in packs. I knew our campus wasn't safe. But, you can walk around outside with people. You're not going to have people sleep next to you in bed because you're scared."

York University issued a campus-wide alert on Friday, pasting bulletins on residence doorways, emailing all students, beefing up security patrols and doubling police at the Keele St. campus.

York University, one of the largest campuses in Canada, is no stranger to this sort of violence. A woman was sexually assaulted while walking to her residence after dark in April. There were two rapes and an attempted sexual assault in the same area of the city at the end of 2006. Two more women were assaulted, one near York, and another on the campus, in 2000.
