England still has twice a day delivery. Seems a bit excessive. In the US I believe they still pick up as well as drop off, 6 days a week. It's a shame to lose door to door in areas that make sense. But buy a condo and you'll still get it delivered to your building. The main worry is that these superboxes become theft magnets.

I wonder how CUPE would react to Taiwanese labour rates?

Perhaps, it is because Taiwan is slightly smaller than Canada?

We are prisoners of our geography and it leads to all sorts of apparent inefficiencies when we are compared to other countries. Of course we are one of the very highest carbon emitters on the planet per capita. IT'S FECKIN' COLD HERE FOR A THIRD OF THE YEAR!

They're cutting out urban door to door. We're one of the most urbanized countries in the world. The rural people and newer suburb people already don't get door to door.

True enough but our urban areas are hours flying time apart. The letter that I post in Quidi Vidi gets delivered in Nanaiamo 72 hrs. later.

Yes, that's true. I could see charging for post by distance. I mean what would it cost you to send a letter from Oslo to Madrid vs Vancouver to Halifax?

The miracle is than when you send a letter from Vancouver to Halifax, both the sender and receiver share almost the exact same culture, speak almost the same dialect of English and don't require any sort of translation. There are only a few places on Earth, like that but I digress...

Perhaps, this sort of homogeneity was possible because of things like common postal service.

I could never understand why a letter I posted from Kaohsiung to Winnipeg seemed to get there in about the same time, and often less, than a letter I posted in Neepawa, MB took to get to Yorkton, Saskatchewan.

I think I read a short story a long time ago about a guy who saw this problem, so he sent a letter to Alpha Centauri, and it came back as 'no such occupant' before noon the same day. The further away, the faster it seems to get there.

It is all trucked/flown to Winnipeg, where it is sorted at the same postal gateway, then it's shipped back out, again.

Best unintended comedy ever!

Poor Mr. Costner. He tried so hard to be epic. 8)
