Awww, that's cute, terrifying, but cute.

And for the record I'd like to say the Hunter was one of the good guys. He didn't blow Winnie the Pooh out of his socks when he climbed up the tree to see what they were doing up there even though that would have been a lot of peoples first reaction. [B-o]

All the hours I've spent in treestands and 8O "Holy shit" doesn't come close! I have to admit, I'd be one of the ones ready to send the bear to the afterlife. It would be a toss up between that and trying to give it a nose scratch. So long as those big claws stayed attached to the tree, the bear would continue breathing.

I've seen what curious bears can do unintentionally, and intentionally. We really are meat popsicles to them.

Bear repellent(aka bird) rather than something more fatal would do the job. We always had a .410 or 12 gauge when we went camping and or berry picking. Black bears were quite a common wildlife encounter around my parents place.

I dunno maybe I'm an ignorant wanker too ( bet many will nod their head in acknowledgement when the read that ! ) but I also don't get the sport of hunting too.

Well, hunting comes in three forms; subsistence hunting, "varmint" control and sport hunting. Subsistence hunting has played an important role in the West as it provides food and clothing, even today. Nothing like saving on your grocery bill than having a freezer full of game.
Varmint control is just that and it's mainly farmers who partake whether it's rabbits or wolves/wild dogs. In that same vein is population control. If a herd of deer(or other animal) start becoming too many for the available food in their area, special hunting licences are handed out to cull their numbers so they all don't starve. As counter-intuitive as that may sound, it's actually humane.

Sport hunting is where I have a major problem. Killing an animal just for a trophy or to see how many you can bag over a given period is irresponsible and if caught, those people should have both their hunting licence and licence to possess firearms revoked.

I was curious about this as well, as I was born in Cape Breton and although I never spent much time there, much of my family still lives there and are familiar with most of the native traditions/customs, specifically with regards to hunting because my dad was a hunter.

I did a search and I found this:
http://www.pantheon.org/articles/a/albi ... imals.html

So apparently its a real thing.

Sorry, but I don't buy into the sacred animal myth anymore than I buy into transubstantiation or healing crystals. Natives are no more stewards of the land than any people are.

The most fun I've ever had with a black bear was when sitting by a beaver meadow, scoping it out for deer. I heard a bear coming through some blackberry brambles about 100' away, I waited until he was about 20' feet away, then just said "hey bear".... the poor bugger's head came up, his ears straight up in the air, eyes bulging.....He went straight up 6' in the air, did a 180 turn in mid air and took off.....spraying blueberry crap as he went, looking as if he was jet propelled. 20 minutes later I heard rocks coming down the mountain to the east, glassing it, it was the bear still going hell bent towards Pemberton.....

Don't get me wrong. I agree 100% with what you say. If anything the extended fishing/hunting rights that they have, have given them licence to reek havok on the fishing and hunting industries. I remember this story in particular were they were commercially fishing lobster at over 4 times the legal limit and trying to pass it off as subsistance fishing.

I only did the search because I thought the entire "spirit animal" story was bogus.

When Natives learn to actually practice what they preach, then maybe I can listen.

Till then, this is a load of PC hogwash.

I grew up in NB, never ever heard the fainest of this white spirit idea.
