He wasn't arrested anyway. He just got moved to the back of the room and told to shut up for being a jerk.

That's arrested. Being a jerk is a professional necessity for any reporter.

National Post had photographs of the altercation in their article. Pretty well everyone (CBC, National Post, CTV, etc) is reporting that Li became physical with Julie Vaux. Now Li claims that Vaux shoved him first, but unfortunately for him no one witnessed it.

I didn't see any shoving at all in the video, until he was being carted away. Why was she trying to get himn out of the line?

I'd worry about it if it had happened to a reporter from the CBC or the G&M. That it happened to some faker from a Chinese Communist state-run propaganda organ means less than nothing to me.

The CBC and G&M reporters are pretty much trained seals. They just go to the briefings, pick up the handouts or approved press lines and move on.

But yeah--it's pretty much a given that anybody to do with the Chinese State run newspaper is essentially a operative for the Chinese. I still don't like reporters being arrested for asking questions though.

Eyewitnesses (probably the reporters who were present) saw Li shoving Vaux. Haven't read any accounts of the scuffle that corroborate Li's version of the story.

Do keep in mind, the room was full of reporters and cameras. Li should be able to find someone to support his story. Unless he is completely full of crap, which I believe to be likely.

Maybe. Like I said, I couldn't see much in the video. Either it wasn't on there, or the verb "shove" is a big exaggeration. Still doesn't away why they ordered the cameras to shut down and threw them out. And that was on the video.

And why was Viaux telling him to get out of line to start with? Why should she decide who gets to be in line and who doesn't? Apparently the reporters present had already sorted the line up.

$1:
It is Harper’s practice to limit the number of questions he takes from reporters — typically on this trip, four from the national media, one from any local media present, and one from Radio-Canada. Because of the limit on questions, reporters typically pool their efforts, and also determine by consensus who will pose them, and in what order. Questions are not shown to PMO staff in advance.

However, when the reporters’ list of questioners went back to the PMO, word came back that Harper had declined to take a question from Li. Throughout this six-day swing through the far North — Harper’s eighth as prime minister — Li and another Chinese-language journalist, Xinhua news bureau chief Dacheng Zhang, have complained they were being unfairly kept away from tour events made accessible to Canadian journalists.

The PM said he didn't want to speak with that particular individual, that's why.

Really? Harper has been under fire for years from reporters, because he changed the way reporting was done. Reporters who don't 'conform' and ask certain questions and stay away from certain subjects are never re-invited to press conferences. They are declared Persona Non Grata. That's why the MSM sucks, is because they let him get away with controlling the message.

(The Newsroom 'Romney Bus' storyline is particulally funny on this point)

Yes, we have a pretty bovine press corps here, happy to stand in line and do as they're told. Who cares if Harper didn't like the question?

Pretty sad state of affairs when the Canadian press corps has become so bovine that it takes a reporter from Communist China to do what Canadian reporters should be doing--demanding answers.

You guys are just too polite is all.

Oh.

Sorry.
