They just hop on a bus and check everyone for a valid ticket, which is like your old transfer, but is now given with every fare paid, showing time bought and number of zones paid for.

Not quite, the transit police usually travel in packs of 2-3, so the first thing they do is call for backup, then when there are 4-6 of them they can easily throw the suspect to the ground to make it easier to taser them, usually 3-4 times to make them more docile, before finally finding out the little old lady on crutches didn't bother to purchase a ticket as she had a monthly pass.....
