Saying the actions of the terrorists are no different than the actions of the American soldiers, is the point of contention. American soldiers going apeshit and murdering civilians is an exception to their normal behaviour, while the acts of brutality by certain rebel elements seems to be SOP.

It is. That makes the actions of the soldiers so much worse, i think. They are conditoned not to do it. Either they lose their nut or they make a conscious decision to ignore the social conditioning.
