Even worse in New York.

$1:
Recent research conducted by the University Transportation Research Center at the City College of New York, shows that bridges in New York State have been experiencing approximately 200 strikes annually by over-height trucks.

I'm having a hard time believing that little bit of damage to the corner of the trailer is solely responsible for taking out that bridge. If it is then that bridge should have been condemned a long time ago.

That's not a trailer, that's a steel box made for the oil patch. All structural steel tubing boxed in with steel plate. A lot of mass rolling down the Highway, would be a sizable impact.

The whole weight of that truck wouldn't be more than 45 tonnes. It's a lot, but not a huge amount by any stretch. Shouldn't have been enough to take out a bridge.

Merely pointing out that it isn't an aluminum trailer that was dented. It's a very rigid steel structure that looks like it was bowed from front to back (look along the top).

I agree, shouldn't take down a bridge. And wouldn't take down a new one. But it was a bigger hit than I think some posters on here are picturing.

Indeed, especially considering the driver could feel it. in a rig that heavy you don't notice "minor" bumps.

I know! You think the driver would hear the sound of metal crashing into metal if the trailer crashed into a cross beam. I'm sure he would have heard the same sound 20 times in a row.
