Really. And is it the owners forcing Rattman to keep teams in Nascar markets?
Is it the other 31 team owners that keep telling Rattman to keep a team in Phoenix? It's one thing to subsidize a small market team that has a decent fan base so they can still be competitive. It's another thing entirely to subsidize a team in a large market just because the "fans" in that market don't give a shit about hockey.
How long have the Coyotes been around? More than long enough to determine that Phoenix/Glendale is NOT a place for an NHL team.
If Bettman were merely an employee of the owners, this lockout wouldn't be happening right now.
It's time to refresh on the structure of the NHL.
First, there are 30 teams, not 32. Second...yes, it's the owners telling Bettman to keep teams in their current location. Why?
The NHL has a board of governors. One governor from each team is on the board alone with two others from each organization. They make the decisions about
everything. Rule changes, schedules, NHL staff (including the Commissioner) and most importantly the relocation, purchase or sale of any of the teams in the league.
The owners and the board of governors decided unanimously to lockout it's players. Gary is just driving the car, they're telling him where to go.
