DrCaleb DrCaleb:
Endangered is irrelvant. Whales are protected by international treaty, endangered or not. Japan is a signatory to that treaty.
There is a loophole that Japan exploits, that says any whales taken for scientific research must not be 'wasted' but used for human consumption. Some people (like me) feel that if you sign a treaty designed to protect a species only to to flaunt the treaty (by doing no actual scientific research) that is reprehensible.
I too applaud Mr. Watson for actually doing something in line with his beliefs and not just sitting idly by.
Dr. C, that's sprinkled with propaganda BS, I'm afraid.
Let's not waste time mincing words.
IWC passed a resolution in 2006 to end the moratorium on whales.
Japan has been continuing their 'research' until that happens, as we are well past the resolutions enactment period.
Both sides are breaking the rules of this voluntary group, but I doubt that will go on much longer. The Japanese are probably getting a little sick and tired of the IWC's constant flip flops and may leave the IWC soon enough.
At that point, they will be free to whale however they please.
Now, if Japan was even remotely close to being the boogey man that some state they are, why have they not left the IWC to whale legally?
