Xort Xort:
desertdude desertdude:
I have lived ALL my life not more than a 3 hrs drive away from the Saudi border, have been to Saudia, have good friends living in Saudia . Saudis come and go here as often Americans cross the Mexican border. Have talked and spent time with Saudis etc etc etc.
Living beside a nation doesn't magicaly grant to knowledge about it's political structure.
$1:
So yes I do know a whole lot more about Saudia and how Saudia works and what is the population in general are thinking.
Because you live 3hrs away from the boarder. Physical proximity does not impart knowledge.

Call me crazy but, I kinda think going to the country on a regular basis gives you knowledge of the country.

Regardless a person who has DD's experience with Saudis, far outweighs your wiki degree or my peripheral knowledge of the country from news reports and the odd conversation with a Saudi online.

I was half way typing a detailed quote by quote answer fro Xort when I reread properly what he had written and decided it does not warrant a proper reply because there is so much dumb assery in there that on this can suffice

No but according to Xort and living a million miles away and googling furiously does make you an expert with your hand right on the pulse of the country

I still think you are more qualified to comment on Saudi society than Xort or I.

It is SO hard to admit you might be wrong, and that someone actually DOES have more experience than you.

Xort, where do you get your info? First hand (like DD), second hand, or the interwebz?

Xort had been very good at attacking other people's credentials, experience and knowledge... but I don't remember him telling us what his were.

Xort is what happens when one's arrogance far outstrips their intelligence.

Either that, or Xort is an engineer. You can't tell those bastards anything either cuz they think they know all

And to be fair to DD, what he posted pretty much correlates with what I've been reading about SA lately. The citizens want reforms, the outside world wants SA to institute reforms. All while the King has to measure his repsonses due to enormous pressure put on him by Islamic scholars and clerics. He may be the King, but kings have been deposed all throughout history and it's generally been ugly when it happened.
Even now the King is working on reforms to raise the legal age of marriage and eliminate marriage to 10 yr old girls. The ONLY place he's getting flak for it is from the scholars and clerics, NOT the general population.

Compare that to Iran where they are messing with the idea of lowering the age from 10 to 9. Considering the Iranians have never been enamoured with Islamic rule, it sure ain't the people of Iran hollering for that particular "reform".

It's funny how Xort rails about how living next door to a country doesn't make one an expert of said country. But apparently, living on the other side of the world with no connection to the mid-east whatsoever, makes him/her/it an authourity on SA.

It's too bad Xort doesn't put in as much time and effort learning to spell as they do being argumentative for argument sake.
OTOH, it is somewhat amusing at times watching the semi-literate get all arrogant and condescending.

I found this little pearl of his hilarious.

Crazy, it will give you some knowledge of a country but not enough to make an informed opinion on all the subjects relating to the topic. DD likely has a greater understanding of the local custom and the way people conduct day to day life. But unless he has put an effort into educating himself, he will be ignorant of a lot of the depth of current events, history, legal structure, government objectives and areas of concern. Those are things you don't just soak up. If you spent a lot of time in an area you might get a feel for the current local issues, but those are not hugely helpful in trying to understand a large nation.

$1:
Regardless a person who has DD's experience with Saudis, far outweighs your wiki degree or my peripheral knowledge of the country from news reports and the odd conversation with a Saudi online.

However DD is saying very stupid things.

"Kuwait, Bharain and UAE all developed into very liberal countries after the 70's."
Maybe he ment to say 'Kuwait, Bharain and UAE have become a little bit more liberal after the 70's' ?
~
As for my referance, I always try to give an easy to check answer. If you can check what I'm saying is true you are more likely to believe me than if I'm making referance to a book you don't have, and isn't online to look at.
raydan raydan:
Spell-checker doesn't catch this one.

Doesn't catch any of them. Again should I go out of my way to point out everyone elses mistakes? I'm not the only one here that fucks up. Or should I keep on topic? If you have nothing on topic to say, then say nothing. Pointing out a spelling mistake isn't a counter arugment and offers nothing of value.

Is the King keeping the people oppressed for some reason or is he moving forward with as many reforms as he can without having a civil war? That is the question.

Brenda Brenda:
It is SO hard to admit you might be wrong, and that someone actually DOES have more experience than you.
Xort, where do you get your info? First hand (like DD), second hand, or the interwebz?

That would be second hand, and the internet although that would include second hand sources.
You think that DD is correct and I am wrong. So you think that a nation that puts people to death for leaving a religion is very liberal?
Same question I asked above, is the King keeping the people down, or is he doing everything he can without a war?
I don't know is a valid answer too.
raydan raydan:
Xort had been very good at attacking other people's credentials, experience and knowledge... but I don't remember him telling us what his were.
I haven't attacked anyone's credentials.
I don't normaly make arguments that are appeals to authority. I will take the authorities logic and reason and use that directly, rather than the summery.
~
Is it possible everyone here but me has mixed up King Abdullah with King Fahd? Because Fahd was a dick.

A severe schizophrenic, suffering from Tourette syndrome, in the middle of a psychotic break can put together a more credible argument than you can.

That's because it doesn't search for homophones, just incorrectly spelled words.

This sentence alone has more fail in it that all the posts ever posted on this forum.

Maybe that is the same reason people rose up against Ghaddafi, they hated him for his reforms and liberal views.

Who else is on your list of reformist leaders ? Hosni Mubarak, Ben Ali......Mugabe ???

DD, give it up, man. Your experience has no value if you haven't studied the issue online. The daily news you get from Saudia is far less valuable than Xort's wiki degree...

Because I don't use one.
You seem to be keen on pointing out spelling errors, but not having anything meaningful to say.

But again you are unwilling to explain.

That's a funny statement actualy given that a strong contingent of the reble force was composed of what is discribed as hard line Islamists.

I notice that you declined to answer the question I posed to you. Would you call a nation that puts people to death for apostasy very liberal?

Such a detailed reply, I liked how you broke down my argument point by point, and explained your reasoning.
