Would you enter your nephew in an event that had this high a chance of getting him killed? If these horses are part of their family, they have a pretty weird concept of what that means. It's just bullshit tears. They're using the horses, they should just admit it. Not act so stunned when the inevitable happens.

Would you let your nephew drink? How about drive? Everything has risks and accidents happen to people too, a horse can break its leg from a hoof entering a gopher hole, resulting in having to put the animal down. Are you saying that if you love something you will pad them extra tight with pillows and never let them out?

Not a sound argument. You let the horses out to be horses. Horses don't want to race chuckwagons, they'd be totally content to never do it, and the probability of injury of entering a gopher hole is a lot less than the high probability of death in the race. Big difference between never letting them out and entering them in death race 2000.

If these people want to race their horses, I'm not really in favor of banning them, tho i think it's stupid. But cut out the phony tears and acting like it wasn't expected. Nobody buys that act.

How is it a death race? 2 horses of 216 die in a year, they raced nine times. That's less than 1% of the horses involved and about a 0.1% chance per race. You can stop trying to make it seem like they have a firing squad for the losing horses. Not everyone has the same mentality where everything you love should be coddled and kept far from anything dangerous, in fact, many horses are naturally competitive. Not everything is you love it or it is a dollar sign to your eyes, try going out to a farm and meeting people that compete with horses.

Agreed. The quivering lip bullshit and family sentiments annoy the crap out of me - more likely the tears are for the cost of horse replacement.

My dog is like family as well, an animal I love very much. And although I don't want to stop it being a dog, I will also not go out of my way to expose it to danger where it will be badly injured or killed.

The idiot owner that CBC interviewed last night came off as a bit of a shitpump with his repeated "that's all I'm gonna say about that" crap

So people that race chuckwagons never have a strong connection to their horses? Horses aren't cattle, you rarely find a farmer with a few thousand head of horse, more often you find them with less horses than you have fingers and each one is important to them as they spend countless hours training them. Hard to not have a connection to an animal you spend that much time with.

To go along with the dog idea, not everyone loves their dog like a part of the family, to them it could just be a show animal or breeding stock, but many do consider them part of the family.

Yeah, hence the correct point Andy made about the bullshit crocodile tears, Jeff.

I call bullshit on the strong family connection schtick when you turn around and then expose the animal to an extremely dangerous sport that has good chance of maiming or killing it.

I'll buy the whole "the animal is a show animal or racing animal" without a doubt, but I don't buy the "family" line of bullshit.

How many people would take out the family dog to a race or event, being a show dog when chances are, two of the dogs in that race will die that day?

The answer? None.

But that's impossible because he doesn't pad them with pillows and make sure they never leave the stable for their own safety.

Sorry but of all the topics to drop a turd in it, this wasn't it.

Actual discussion was taking place and unlike the majority of the topics on here, it wasn't about politics, income equality or health care.
