I think most people agree on this, but I wonder if most of us would have stopped at actually killing the guy !

Because she is 4, and in her own home. Everyone else had stepped outside (in the yard) for a BBQ (or so the story says). I see 4 year old kids walk to school alone here, why can't she stay watch Dora? I am pretty sure mom and dad where at a distance that when she needed them, they would hear her.

Most people don't expect their friends to molest their kids.

Sad thing is, it's usually someone the child/parent knows....and likely trusted.
