The concept of national citizenship is really pretty silly, IMHO. The only citizenship that really matters is citizenship in the human race and Khadr has demonstrated that he's not worthy of membership therein.

So you'd be ok with EVERYONE becoming Canadian, whether they live in Canada or not, enjoying all benefits that come with that citizenship?

3rd world country residents will love you. Canadian tax payers won't...

Brenda Brenda:
BTW, when it comes to citizenship, why is it 3 years? Why not 10? Or 15?

That's a bit extreme, Brenda. There are pluses and minuses to short or long waiting periods, and we have to balance those. With Gruebel's suggestion that we draw immigrants by first giving them 2 2 year temp work permits before fast tracking their immigration (ie you work for 4 years, and if you keep your nose clean, you become a pr) then we could have a 3 year waiting period for a total of 7 years spent here. That seems about right to me. When you say 15 years for citzenship, you could just as easily say that you only get it by being born here - ie the children of immigrants.

You, again, are mixing foreign workers and immigration.
You are PR when you land as an immigrant. Now, you have a minimum of 3 year wait until you can become a citizen. The ONLY difference is, that as a PR, you cannot vote. Everything else is the same. Same taxes, same benefits, etc etc. You are not eligible for building up OAS the first 10 years of your residency in Canada.
So, why not make it 10 years before you can become a citizen?

No mix up, I offered what I think is a more reasonable approach to immigration, that would naturally lead to a 7 yr wait for citzenship. The CPC is moving toward that on their own - ie tying in immigration with a specific job, but doing nothing about the waiting period for citizenship. I think it should be longer, but not too long.

So, you would keep the wait time for PR's to become citizens the same.
See, not everybody comes into the country needing a job. Some people create them, come as entrepreneurs. Others enter with family-class based visas. Some people live here as pensionado's, crossing the border every 6 months to get a stamp, living off the pensions and OAS from their home countries. The last categories btw will not become citizens, because they live here as tourists.

OK, good point. For those people I would make it 7 years, same as for those coming in for work.

Just cuz the little dirt bag said he was, doesn't make it fact. Not one penny to this dirt bag.

Sure, why not? So long as they pay their way, obey the law, respect Canadian values and make positive contibutions to society.

If those people followed the stipulations I've made above, why would it cost the taxpayers anything? What would really be great is if all the rest of the world became like Canada. Make the whole world Canada, I say.

I thought those stipulations were not important? Only the fact if they are human or not is important, right?
NATIONAL citizenship is silly, remember?

I think you must be having an ESL moment. :D Those stipulations are goals for humanity, not nationality.

Impose, no, but if Canada wasn't a relative Utopia, people wouldn't want to come here, would they?
