Zipperfish Zipperfish:
Offensive to a tiny minority. That's the crux of the issue for me. One person complained in 30 million. One. Heck, they're having a hard time even finding anyone in the gay community who takes offence--again, excepting the perpetually aggrieved groups like Egale.

Yes, one person spoke out. How many didn't? Also, you may be enlightened to know that in Canada, a role of the government is to protect the minority from the majority.

I also noticed you conveniently skipped over the abundant ways to hear your precious "little faggot" lyric.

$1:
Are you even capable of having a discussion without getting your panties in a knot? (oh--please don't report that one to the CBSC; they may interpret as slight against the LGBT community).

Zipperfish you are looking quite the hypocrite. First, you accuse me of having a black or white view to this issue but then cry like a little bitch when it's pointed out you can't abstain from that behaviour in the very same post you decry it. Now you want people not to get their panties in a knot but then you try awfully shallow baiting tactics and alter quotes?

You may want to sit this discussion out. It's affecting you.

$1:
I was enriched by hearing the song.

Really? How?

Also to Lemmy: I asked if you were enriched by hearing "little faggot with the earring", not "do you appreciate art". I noticed you had to answer a question I didn't ask in complete avoidance.

To everyone else: Censorship is a way of life around here. The song isn't being banned, it's been edited for terrestrial radio play like a thousand other songs before it.

Guess what? Movies are also edited for basic cable! Holy shit! Is anyone here up in arms that you can't hear Biff Tannen and the gang yell "Shiiiiiiit" as their car slides sideways into a manure truck on basic cable?

1/30 000 000 million isn't a minority anymore, that's microbial.

@ Refreshed, reference my question to the gays out there, I asked the same question over at SSP. I couldn't believe someone answered as quick as they did. Yes it's only 1, but this is how you build up the collective view of a group of people using a literally random sample:

Frankly, took a lot of nuts from the guy. I find it commendable, and I hope more voice their opinions, whether they agree or disagree with my personal views. They have more of a right than anyone to determine if the word "faggot" is offensive to them or not.

I avoided nothing. Yes, I am enriched by hearing the song...the whole song. Sometimes art is hard. It's not always for the sqeamish. But the work of art is the WHOLE work, not just the parts of it that are appealing to our sometimes gentle sensitivities. If this word (in this case, a word you're taking out of context) offends you, exercise your right to not listen to it. But don't go telling me we should be breaking penises off sculptures because they may offend someone's sensibilities.

The thing I don't get, it's been playing on the radio since 1985 when "Brothers in Arms" came out. You mean to tell me it took 26 years of air play to offend someone in Canada with one of the lyrics? Political correctness at it's finest, what a waste of time and resources.

Isn't there a "Statute of limitations" or something for this? :?

You've got 5 years to complain, after that, STFU!

How is an iPod an awful way to listen to music? Does that opinion extend to all digital music players?

When they're played through headphones, yes. You need speakers to listen to music.

I'm curious, have you had a really good pair of headphones?

(This isn't to say speakers aren't better, because that's obvious, but listening to a good quality song through good quality headphones isn't the same as listening through ipod earbuds.)

Yeah I have decent headphones. I use them mostly for recording rather than listening to prerecorded music. Sure, they're better than cheap ear buds. But it's still not the same as ambient sound. And ANY headphones are, IMHO, uncomfortable to wear.

Khar Khar:
No, people have said that only one person complained, and that that response from the gay community has been mostly in agreement. Both of those come directly out of Zipperfish's responses, and neither comment said that only one gay person is opposed to this word on the radio.

Unless I missed a post, and if I did, could you please quote it? I've gone back 8 pages and cannot find a reference to a single person being the only one opposed to this.

Otherwise, you've not refuted what was said here. As I mentioned previously, a sample size of less than a dozen is not a real sampling of a community.

Thanks Khar. You're a gentleman, a scholar and a judge of fine whiskies.

Goodbye everyone.

I've disagreed to the point certain folks want me to leave and I'm about to be banned.

Some people support free speech as long as they agree with it. If they don't, some people get angry and stop thinking clearly. Ironic but true. Take care hypocrites.

But I'm still waiting for my apology...

That's fair. I find using a good set of IEMs are fine, especially if the quality of song is good. Comfort can be an issue, but I get use to it.

I conveniently skipped over a lot of things because I didn't want to getting the way of your hissy fit. Who knows how many people didn't speak out about this song--not that many given that evidence posted here to date indicates people overwhelmingly oppose this decision.

I'm sorry, could you please try to be even a little more pompous. "you may be enlightened to know..."

Hey, I'll save you the argument--I am a hypocrit. Show me a man who says he's not and I'll show you a hypocrit. AS Walt Whitman said "I am large / I contain multitudes." As insults go, it's not much of one as far as I'm concerned.

As far as the "crying like a little bitch bit," no such luck there. Your attack lost its bite long ago, my friend. You're a yappy Chihuahua that looks in the mirror and sees a pit bull.

A couple of things. First off--one of the best intros ever. I must have seen--aging myself here--three dozen bands cover this song in the clubs in the 80s. No one could ever get that face-melting opening riff the way

Also, we used to play the song when we go fag-bashing outside the gay bars at closing time.

I use my ipod when I'm on my way to and from work(can't really install a decent stereo system on a scooter), or in the office and use a set of Phillips headphones that sit on my ears the way glasses do, so there's no discomfort. At home, my stereo system has a dock for the ipod.
