Cyclists should be on their own cycling paths, especially in the city. We all know we are all asses on the road at one time or another, and a cyclist won't win from the driver.
Canada has to provide cyclists a safe lane to cycle on.
We don't need plates, because cyclists don't do that much damage, and it is covered through your personal insurance.

It is Utopia to think people will all get along on the road. We never will. But maybe, if the government would really like to spend their tax money wisely, maybe bike lanes is a good way to start.

This Nancy person obviously has an agenda to push, and any rational argument is pointless as she is going to spin it or throw out red herrings to try and promote it. Why this thread has gone on for this long when we're stuck on the merry-go-round is beyond me. This is not an issue about cyclists vs. motorists, as this situation is so bizarre and unique it's pointless for either side to take this up to support their cause. This is not how the average cyclist acts and this is not a situation the average motorist encounters.

If stating one's opinion means one has an "agenda to push", I beg to differ as to your definition of the word dense or to whom it applies.

This is a high profile case, one dead, the other the former AG of Ontario. An AG of Ontario who, btw, pushed hard for safer rules of the road.

If you look at that video link I posted earlier, you'll see that Bryant apparently bullied the cyclist before hitting him - using his car as a weapon. Being a former pro-boxer, I'm surprised Bryant didn't just get out of his car and wallop the guy out of his way. Oh wait- he couldn't do that he'd be charged with assault.


I really don't understand the nasty comments you and others continue to make or why those comments are permitted to stay on this thread. Your ad hominen attacks and juvenile "ratings" with petty comments say more about you than they do your target.

I absolutely agree that bike lanes are the way to go.

Motorists and cyclists do not mix well. In addition, some cyclists are all over the road, weaving in and out of traffic - how is that legal???

the problem with off-street bike lanes is they are generally designed for the recreational biker not the commuter. Hence, there are hills and turns to it that dont exist on the road beside the trail.

the hills and turns create a natural restriction and safety hazard to the higher volume commuters.

They just defined bike lanes on a street near my place.
Left lane for cars, bike lane and then parking on the right.
I can see all kinds of problems with this!

The problem with long term bike lanes is that so much of Canada's year is simply awful biking weather and a lot of it is bike impossible.

Biking in rain sucks too. We can clear roads and sidewalks. Why not bike lanes too? Especially in the city. The lower mainland for instance has as many snowy days as Holland does. They can do it...

Even if they can clear bike lanes they'd never be able to commit to clearing them sufficiently on time every snow fall for a daily commuter and quite frankly I can't see any but the most committed hard core biker out there between Dec and say about March.

I think in the snow (even cleared streets) they would be a real danger of slipping into the path of a car that simply could not stop or avoid them.

Had studded winter tires on my bike in college (Saskatoon). Used it all year. Only one wipeout but I was being stupid. There was probably only a 50% chance of me pulling that maneuver off succesfully.

I agree derby. This pushing bike lanes and bikes as a viable mode of urban transportation basically ignores the reality of shite weather (in the GTA) from October to April.

This is a 5-month a year transportation option.

Besides that, this thread has been dragged out far too long by two particular posters. If ever a thread should die or be locked, this is it.

When I lived in Labrador they had designated and well groom ski-doo trails that were basically multi-lane snow-mobile routes used by those of us commuting from Happy-Valley to CFB Goose Bay!

But Goose Bay 'aint Toronnah!
