We have little patriotism to begin with in this country

LITTLE!!! 8O 8O 8O

Are you out of your mind??? Canada is VERY patriotic! I have never seen so many country flags on houses as here. (just to give an example..)

(as a matter of fact... in Holland, you can only flag on given days, from sunrise, to sunset. Not that that is important now, but just to give you an idea...)

Patriotism for its own sake is mindless conformity.

The thing about Holland is that it is such a hole that no one wants to fly the flag. Also, they have never contributed anything apart from building a couple of crappy windmills and their women are ugly (present company excepted, of course)--though admittedly not as repugnant as those Polish fishwives. Also, they eat their young.

Why do people keep using the U.S as a measuring stick? They have their patriotism and we have ours. The only difference is that our patriotism is hampered when people who move here don't like it and our institutes try to compensate them. The U.S is like it or leave it.

Yes, we are..... and whether or not we sang the anthem daily in elementary school seems to be irrelevant.

I really don't think it necessary to sing it every day either to be patriotic...The anthem isn't what makes me patriotic, it is a variable of a lot of experiences.

I was with you until the last part.

You claim we shouldn't use the US as a measuring stick, then suggest our patriotism is "hampered" by certain immigrants?
I do't think your patriotism is dependant on other people.

I suppose my generalization was with the article in question of why the Principle of the school would do the deed to include the few. Not everybody who moves here has to like this country and its values.

You're right. Patriotism is within ones-self but when something tries to deny your sense of patriotism, what do you call it? (I'm not saying the article is suggesting the denial of ones patriotism)

my patrionism (if I had it that much that I would care) is constantly patronized here. If I mention Holland in any way, I should "go back to my country" if I "like it that much".

Why can't you be proud of 2 countries? I was born and raised a Dutchy. I chose to live in this beautiful country. I will stand up for Canada to every foreigner or Canadian who tries to down talk. But I will also stand up for Holland.

No, you said "people who move here don't like it and our institutes".

"Certain" took a lot less time to type.

Well, reality is not every 'certain' persons who move here has to like this country or is values. Is that not why the fellow decided to remove singing of the anthem? Maybe I missed the reason. Didn't seem like a provincially funded move.

A waste of time?

How do you mean?

Damn rights!!! I lived in the US, throughout Europe and in Guatemala...the US was the longest stint of 5 years....but I always stood proud to be Canadian. I dont think anyone should shun their homeland just because they are in a new country. It is an integral part to who they are.

Btw...I do on a continuous basis tell Ontarian's to go back if they like it that much...but I just want them gone :P

Bottoms up for that. [B-o] and for the record I never said 'the' immigrants themselves hampered our patriotism and you quoted me out of context but oh well. 8)

More than anything, I think that the main reason this has upset the 'pro anthem' crowd is that we (me) see it as further erosion of Canadian traditions. For those of you who are ok with the anthem being banned from schools, is there anything that you feel is a tradition that if it were to be banned or changed in any way, would upset you?
