DerbyX DerbyX:
Thats exactly what they said about prayer word for word. They made speeches about how nobody was forcing anybody to pray just because they were listening to a religous prayer. They said that just because christian prayers were being heard my non-christians didn't mean they had to agree with it. We were free to tune out all we wanted but why should a few people dictate to a christian majority who wanted to hear daily affirmations of their faith said allowed so that they won't lose it.

The arguments are identical.

You're point? They may have made the same argument, but they are two different things.

I sang it in Toronto,Winnipeg,Sask.and Alberta schools.

When I hear it I feel a great love for my country, doesnt remind me of god or religion, just how proud I am to be a Canadian. That's one song that still gives me goosebumps when sung.

Not really. Its the idea that without it, patriotism is somehow diminished. That I find silly.

I don't object to it being done during assembly but to me daily just takes away from time better spent learning even if it is a few minutes.

No they don't, especially not in elementary school.

Exactly.

It's one of the most beautiful songs ever. Sends an intense tearful patriotic
shiver up my spine, an excited energy that just makes me want to belt out every line.

What is it, orgasmic? 8O

Can you not 'see this' as another example of political correctness run amok? Yet another piece of Canadian Tradition being done away with in the name of multi-culturism!

Mr_Canada Mr_Canada:
DerbyX... 2 Minutes?

What O Canada does is silences the classroom and makes it orderly to start off the day.

Do you know how long a school day is? It's not like it's 15 minutes long.

So did prayer. The idea that it helps start the day is ludicrous. Every time you switched periods you had the same disruption at the start and teachers managed just fine to start the period.

Please take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with the quote protocols. They are really easy and it makes posts so much easier to read.

Again, the "political correctness" angle gets played whenever we expect religion to be removed from public life.

Mr_Canada Mr_Canada:
I don't know why it's so frikken hard to understand that Religious Prayer in a
Canadian school is very different from a Patriotic Song in a Canadian school.

It's giving me a headache to repeat this again and again!

What connects Canadians from sea to sea to sea? Canada! We all are living in Canada!

Does religion connect Canadians from sea to sea to sea? No.

So it's understandable to remove religion, but removing patriotism makes
no sense at all in an everyday Canadian Classroom.

We aren't all Canadians from sea to sea though. I had Aussies and Brits in my school.

I'm not saying that we shouldn't be celebrating our national anthem. I'm saying it doesn't need to be rammed down people throats daily under the belief it will instal greater patriotism.

BTW, you are too young to remember the whole remove prayer from school debates but yes they even said that we were all christians sea to sea in a nation established by christians. Doesn't mean they were right even if they did say it.
