poquas poquas: EyeBrock EyeBrock: Liberals first need to accept that they were the chief users of this parliamentary procedure. That's ridiculous and more to the point water long under the bridge. This present prorogue is the issue and changing the ability of prorogue at a whim in the future. Presenting a partisan stand that a former government must accept a wrist slapping for something that was wrong and done years ago is silly. Well come on. The Liberals complaining about proroguing parliamnt would be tantamount to Iggy complaining about the CPC not removing the GST when given the chance.

It's parliamentary procedure and one that was well used by the Liberals. The Libs sweeping this fact under the carpet reveals that their 'disgust' is just bluster. It would have been more credible if they had coughed to it being a standard tactic they used in the past. Often. Then they could have made this whole issue seem more honest. As it is it just looks hypocritical and partisan.

It was wrong a year ago, and its wrong now. This proposal does do something to address the issue though. It should not matter what the motivation is, but they did this begrudgingly. To even suggest these proposals should be an admission of guilt.. But its not. Also in the media release is this: $1: To find a precedent for such abuses of power, you have to reach all the way back to 1873, when Sir John A. Macdonald tried to stop Parliament from probing his railway scandal. That is a lie, and it's partisan politics. That doesn't take away from the value of the proposal.

Again you miss the point poquas.
The Liberals could have taken the high road on this by denouncing Trudeau and Chretien's use of the very same and very legal and available parliamentary procedure.
They didn't. They are just denouncing Harpers use of it. Therefore it looks like a totally partisan bunch of whining.

Curtman Curtman: OnTheIce OnTheIce: Secondly, this is the WORST example of hypocrisy in Canadian politics.
If this was really and truly an issue for Liberals and NDP alike, this would be been done DECADES ago.
This proposal has nothing, ZERO, to do with what's best for Canada/Democracy...whatever.
This is to SCORE POLITICAL POINTS and GAIN #'s IN THE POLLS.
Just call a spade a spade. Just to correct you again... The Liberals didn't care when the house prorogued. They ignored everyone on the CAPP page who emailed them until we hit about 60,000.. Those MPs that did talk to us were dismissive and pessimistic. We kept hounding them until they damn well would listen to us. They wouldn't be proposing anything at all if we didn't give them a reason. Precisely my point. This isn't an issue they care about or ever planned to address. NDP and Liberal. But if it'll score them political points and grab some headlines for a few weeks, they're all for it. It's time for Conservatives, Liberals and the NDP to get some real change in Canadian politics. This whole game, year after year of hypocrisy from all parties just leaves me so fed up with the entire political process in this great Country.

I don't like this idea of sitting around and seeing what the politicians can come up with on their own. It's time to start telling them what is acceptable and what isn't. There's going to be partisan politics as long as there are parties. We might as well play them to our advantage, so we can get that change that we need.

If by politicians coming up with something you mean, employing parliamentary procedures then please, just stop already. You make it sound so dreadfully nefarious, that all I can see now is Harper with a little waxed moustache and black top hat standing over Iggy trussed up and lying on a railway track.

Today, instead of spending time in their communities and in their constituency offices, both the Liberals and NDP all gathered in Ottawa for a photo-op.
Nice little bit of media hype paid for by the taxpayers of Canada. Let's fly everyone in to get a few headlines on TV tonight.

We've tried....since before you and I were in diapers. We need someone, a strong leader, who can actually bring in the change needed in Canadian politics. I've never seen such a leader.

I hear Vlado Putin's term will be up soon. Gotta be careful giving one person that much power in a country.. they tend to use it.

I heard today that in the history of Canada, Parliament has been prorogued about 104 times in all.
Strange somehow that the last two occasions are the only instances where democracy was being directly threatened by the procedure, n'est pas?
