Well, I just took a quick our of Conservative-dominated web-sites. They are the worst winners I've ever seen...alternating between gloating offensively and blaming everybody but the Conservatives for not getting a majority. All that money and he increased his vote share by about 1%.
Jesus, they just don't get it. They think politics is a football game.
The NDP did well. Up 7 seats...almost 8. Nettie Wiebe almost took Saskatoon-Rosetown-Biggar. Actually she might yet, they're still counting, but I'm assuming the votes that are coming in now are from the rednack part of the riding. It looks like Duncan won Edmonton-Strathcona for the NDP too. I'm kind of torn about that one because I promised to get drunk for six weeks and mate with Diane Ablonczy if the NDP ever won a seat in Alberta. Guess I'd better start drinking. If somebody can slip a mask over Ablonczy's head, it would be appreciated.
The big question now is what Harper does. It's his third kick at the cat and he failed to get a majority. It is very much him that failed to get the majority as well...it was his call that lost him Quebec. It was his call that lost him Newfoundland too. He just got another term with no mandate and no ability to work with other parties. For most people that'd be the end...he didn't get the job done. Times are weird though, so Steve will stay on for a while.
He can bully for a while longer, but that's not going to go over well for long. He can't go into parliament pretending he's on the cusp of a majority. The Liberals will have a new leader soon, although they won't have any money. I expect the NDP will keep building, especially in the west. I think Duceppe will step down, but Harper did what Duceppe couldn't...re-energized the separatists. Thanks Steve. With a recession coming and environmental policies that are likely to get us in trouble around the world, I doubt Harper will the lead his party into the next election. He'll do a Mulroney and hand it to some sacrificial lamb.
I think we're looking at two more years of Harper and likely six months or a year of Conservative government after that. It'll be ugly, but I doubt Harper will get any of his agenda through. If he starts playing the, "Every vote is a confidence vote," card the opposition is likely to bring him down by accident. If he decides to go after the Senate, the provinces are likely to shut him down.It seems that what most people really mean when they say they have your back is, "I'll stand over here, where it's safe."
