Yet, somehow he's doing just that. Winning. He's united the political parties behind him and I'm willing to bet many voters are willing to forget the whole India affair.

Sounds like winning to me.

Voters will vote for him next election because he's done nothing egregious. The longer he "stands up" to Trump the more popular he'll be/remain.

As for the Car thing, that's all covered by NAFTA.

NAFTA can be cancelled by any side with 6 months notice.
That's more worrying than a '5 year review'.

And it's a lot more than India llama, a lot more. You know that.

And you know, Voters have a goldfish like memory. I get what you are saying, I do- but voters are seeing this and are very happy to see a PM "stand-up" to the states. You know to a degree, there is a bit of a anti-american (not sure if that's the right way to describe it...maybe quiet patriotism?) sediment in Canada, this just plays right in to it.

Canadian's are seeing this as an attack and are rallying...

Remember what Bart said yesterday, since he said he voted for Trump, some people on this forum have treated him with disdain or outright hostility. Its this sense of "America is out to get us" that will drive Trudeau up in the polls. Inarticulate, I know. Its tough to describe.

What you're suggesting
What you’re proposing

What a nice copy / pasta you've done.
I know it is, because in 11 pages, I haven't 'suggested', or 'proposed', a damn thing.

I have been critical of Trudeau's government and Ministers, because they have
absolutely zero idea how to handle the situation, zero idea how to move ahead,
and zero idea of how to win.

This government has been nothing but fail, on every file, for the last 3 years.

You’ve suggested/proposed that Canada unconditionally surrender to Trump and then we should hope we can quietly slither out of it after Congress fails to deliver on America’s end of the bargain.

Regardless of whether you’re suggesting that out of pure cowardice, or because you’re a Trump/Putin fifth columnist or because your own natural inclination towards losing personal failure causes you to instinctively choose the exact opposite of the right thing to do, you’re dead wrong in your assessment of the situation and what should be done next.

$1:
llama66 llama66:
It's not in Canada's interest to "appease" on this matter. We appease on this, Trump will want Auto concessions, then he'll probably want other things.

Its best not to have a trade war, as I and may others have pointed out, the Canadian-US trading system is Symbiotic. Millions of jobs, on both sides of the border rely on NAFTA. The best course of action is to renegotiate NAFTA (minus the Sunset clause).

I repeat, the Trudeau government has no idea how to win.

And you are starting to scratch the real potential for trouble.
Trump doesn't give a good goddamn about milk.

But....... cars....... jobs being repatriated to say.... Michigan.... and Ohio.....

And freaking Dopey is whining on the tv, just giving Trump an excuse to do it.

Ya just can't get more stupid than that.

Trump has no idea how to win. His administration is weak and incompetent and his country is going in to midterm elections politically divided with no foreign allies to support him on trade Putin and maybe Kim Jong Un. Canada is politically united at home and with the other G76 countries like never before.

Republicans are going is going to get their ass handed to them in less than 5 months time during the midterms and with that Trump will be even more flaccid and impotent than ever. Only an idiot would cater to this simpleton and his unearned egomania at this point.

So, the Americans are going to dismantle their corn subsidy system in return? Canadian farmers would sure like a bigger piece of that market.

The susnset clause is more worrying because it means perpetual negotiation and uncertainty. Companies will prefer to base in the US rather than face that. It would have to be at least ten years to be acceptable.

No Sunset Clause is acceptable.

Because I feel levity is needed.

I was just thinking of a editorial comic, drawn as a sticky note on Trump's desk with a t chart. One side says enemies one side says friends, spelled wrong and written like a child.

Under Enemies:
Canada
UK
Germany
South Korea
etc

Under friends
Putin
duterte
Ergodan
Kim

With a speech bubble coming from the side that says "Ah crap he mixed up the lists"

That's what this feels like.

You said he shouldn’t have stood up to Trump. What else does that mean?

As I already posted, DJT is gutting US agricultural subsidies anyway. It's corporate welfare for the three corporations that dominate US agriculture and we can put that money to better use than to just prop up the fortunes of Wall Street.

It'll be kind of ironic if President Trump ends up fueling a resurgence of Canadian nationalism and Canadian identity politics and Lil' Potato ends up benefiting from it!

I'm not sure how long it'll last, but right now, that seems to be happening. I haven't seen a poll for little potato since all this dropped. I'd be interested to see how right I am.
