They mentioned "man made" causes earlier. Not deliberate arson but duh-duh mouthbreather idiocy. Like tossed cigarette butt and hot exhaust from clods ripping around on ATV'S and dirt bikes in fire-ban areas.

ShepherdsDog ShepherdsDog:
Cities in Europe, China, Russia and Japan that were damaged worse, were rebuilt in the 1950s. Fort Mac also sits beside the world's third largest oil reserve, so it'll be rebuilt....hopefully with big ass fire breaks around the city this time.

Not sure if one of the sites gets destroyed if it'll be rebuilt. With the prices so awful they might get scrapped & capped. If there's no significant price recovery until the next decade there'll be zero push from both companies and investors to do it again for a long, long time.

More than one fire in the area has been blamed on First Nations looking to make a summer job for themselves on a fire crew.

That's been a charge levied in several places and times. If they started here, it would be kids playing with matches rather than a make work project.

From what I've read, it just suddenly appeared on the east side of the Clearwater river, near Gregoire Lakes.

From the area it was first noticed, it might have been one of the tent cities that dot the land around there. Just someone with a camp stove or BBQ that got out of control.

^^ That. People are already refugees in the unused camps. No need to rebuild the town if they can house people on site and fly them in and out as needed.

That said, if anyone builds houses or is a general contractor, I can see some insurance work coming in the next 6 months.

Or it just happened. Shit happens and there isn't always a reason.

If they don't get gypped by their insurance coverage I can easily see hundreds of families just taking the settlement money and relocating somewhere far away. No point rebuilding houses when even after the fires are gone there'll still be hundreds of them up for sale thanks to the oil collapse. Half the realtors up there have left town already because the resale market is so dead.

A post from facebook.

$1:
From Bob's co-worker and friend in Shell this morning.
im pretty proud of who i work for (shell canada) in this time of hardship they said anyone that can make it to our camp will be looked after. no one will be turned away. free flights to edmonton and calgary will be supplied. flights came and went all night. another 6500 will fly out today. the fuel situation getting to edmonton was horrible, everyone sold out. shell sent two tanker trucks out on hwy 63 and started fueling vehicles for free. now when i hear about how the big oil companies are just in it for themselves i have to wonder, would green peice do that?

No wonder their shut down, they seem to be doing more than the Alberta government.

Amazing that no one has died in this. Amazing.
I certainly hope that is true but I highly doubt it given the circumstances. At this point all we know is there have not been any reports of serious injuries. I think we will know more in the coming days but the reality is Fort Mac is a boom town and there are likely people there whos absence would not be immediately noticed. Again, I hope that is not the case but it is pretty early to say for sure.

Unfortunately true. From what I remember of some of the crackheads that used to cluster around the downtown Ft Mac Esso/711 they were so out of it they probably wouldn't even notice that the fire was happening. :|

Hyack Hyack:

Can't believe the comments from the 'environmentalists' on that site. Jesus, can they let it alone at least until the fire is out? For the love of God, people might be dying out there and people are absolutely fleeing for their lives and losing everything and some buttfuck in a cozy apartment in GTA or Ottawa decides to seize the moment to give everyone an 'important lesson' about bitumen, oil sands, and global warming.

Meanwhile there's thousands of Canadians out silently doing their best to help people save what's left, to help them escape the flames, and you know there's good people out there getting things in motion to help people recover and rebuild.

I got to remember to focus on the good people in this thing.
