Sorry, Yanis Varoufakis is Nevil Chamberlain at this point. He is a great thinker and his debate vs John Bolton I laud but it's time to call a spade a spade. Putin, and his cronies, must be held to account.

Thoughts on Biden's speech?

This looks to be to shore up the resolve of the Baltics. Some see this as WW3.

I see too many moving parts now, this has a momentum all its own. This could still draw down but we are looking more to chance than choice at this point.

Just a statement of truth by Biden, and definitely not a call for regime change. Or if Putin gets toppled Biden clearly meant it as something the Russians have to rise up and do themselves because it quite literally can't be done by anyone else.

I like how they are spending air by re-focusing the comment on that he should be removed by the voters of Russia.

Like Putin lets them decide.

I could give examples from my childhood. When a bully attacks you, if you do nothing but defend then the bully will just escalate and continue to push the attack until he wins. The only way to stop a bully is to counter-attack. Show him that if he attacks you, he will get hurt.

Russia is launching missiles into Ukraine from Russia soil. Those launch sites need to be taken out. On Russia soil. I don't know if they're fixed launch positions are mobile launchers, but whatever launches an attack on Ukraine is a legitimate target. Does Ukraine have any conventional missiles to take out those launch sites? Today's news includes missiles launched at Lviv. Ukraine is using low-and-slow UAVs purchased from Turkey to launch air-to-ground missiles. They're effective because they fly under Russian radar. I suspect they couldn't penetrate deeply into Russian airspace without being taken out, but could they penetrate a short distance to reach Russian launch sites? Where is Russia launching from? What would it take for Ukraine to take them out?

They are launching from just outside encircled cities. The rocket artillery they use doesn't have a lot of range. IIRC, 250 - 300km max. They are mostly unguided, just like regular artillery. But they sure can hit schools and hospitals!

The best way to take them out, as you say, is with low and slow drones. Super effective!

What long-range missiles? Where from? I left out reports of hypersonic missiles launched from ships in the Black Sea.

Oh, when it happens voting will have nothing to do with it. And Russians traditionally don't use something as merciful as a guillotine either when it comes time to remove some of the trash.

In apparent shift in strategy, Russians troops stop offensive toward Kyiv: Pentagon on Day 30

Ukraine arrests yet another 'Zelensky hit squad of 25 men sent by Putin' close to Slovakian border

there is a fake video going around about "Ukrainian" soldiers shooting Russian POWs in the leg.

The original video

The cut version, posted by Maria Dubovikova, a Russian propagandist

Thread debunking the video

Main issues with the video:
- no visible bullet wounds in the leg
- no blood on the ground after being shot
- when there is blood on the ground, the bandages on the "bullet wounds" are completely clean
- at the 2:35 mark a soldier with white armband can be seen standing with his weapon (Russians wear white), this part was cut out by the propagandist ofc
- apparently heavy Russian accent, ridiculous insertion of Ukrainian word at 2:04 (can't personally verify, if someone Ukrainian-speaking could confirm that'd be cool)
- Russian-manufactured handguard at 2:33

No need for advanced communications surveillance gear when enemy is this stupid

300 companies have already announced their withdrawal from the Russian market, this affects millions of Russians

You are discussing 3 different things there.

Russian Cruise missile, Russian Hyper sonic Missile, and what I wrote about, Rocket propelled Artillery.

Cruise missiles get used all the time, and get shot down all the time. They can be fired from a number of different positions. Hypersonic, or Ballistic Missiles; there is some debate as to whether these were actually used against Ukraine.

And Rocket Propelled artillery, which were the ones you asked about that were being launched against Lviv earlier today.

The Russians have a saying; "Why send a soldier in where artillery can go in first?".

DrCaleb, thank you for replying. I was asking about long-range missiles launched from Russia. My understanding is the Ukrainian defence force has kept tanks and artillery far enough from Kyiv that they're out of range. Russians are using missiles because that's the only thing with enough range to reach Kyiv. I had assumed that meant rocket propelled artillery would be out of range too. Is that not right? Are Russians using rocket propelled artillery on Kyiv?

The attack earlier today on Lviv is reported to be cruise missiles.

Russian artillery is well within range of Kyiv. They just don't have the numbers in position yet to turn Kyiv into Mariupol. Lviv is just too far away for them to hit with anything but cruise missiles with any degree of consistency. Also, cruise missiles are being fired from Russian Navy not hardened ICBM site in Russia. Russian smart munitions stockpiles are limited and the quality is no where near consistent. They DO have quality weapons but they don't have a logistics chain to support them so they have to be careful on what and where they strike. Cheap, short ranged, dumb munitions are what the Russians depend upon to do the heavy lifting.

I don't know much about those, but you also asked "Where is Russia launching from? What would it take for Ukraine to take them out?" and I did know about rocket artillery they are using throughout the country, and Ukraine drones that were making short work of those emplacements. I go with my strengths. ;)

The one hypersonic missile that they claimed to have launched was reported to hit an empty farmers' field. In the fog of war, such things must be taken with a salt lick, so it might be true. But there aren't many reports of hypersonic missile use outside of that. And those would have to be launched from within Russia. Not very portable.

Winnipegger Winnipegger:

Yes, they seem to use those everywhere, but as Scape wrote, they are hard to resupply. And drones are making them less frequent. ;) But they do have a 200 - 300km range, and there are plenty of Russians that close to Kiev.

Winnipegger Winnipegger:

I also heard reports on the news that many of them were intercepted with anti-missile systems. Russia can't afford to use many of those either.
