Fox host on-air to say sorry for mockery
From the comments:
$1:
J. Hansford
March 25th 2009, 8:53am
Canadians take themselves way to seriously, lighten up folks, I don,t believe the hosts new about the 4 dead soldiers. Why is we can make fun Dubya and the good ole boys from the southern states with hesitation, yet when someone winds us up about our feds we take offence, In my opinion Canadians have become (mind you not all) elitist anal retentive, snobs who can dish it out but not take, It was a satirical late night show get over it.

J. Hansford:

Your comparison of making fun of "Dubya and the good ole boys from the southern states" with soldiers, be they Canadian or American, risking life and limb in war is beyond ludicrous. What does it matters if Gutfeld and his fellow troglodytes were unaware that four more young Canadian soldiers had just lost their lives in Afghanistan? Would the stupefying comments made be any less offensive? I'm happy you found amusement in the mocking of Canada and its courageous soldiers by idiots who most likely couldn't find Canada, let alone Afghanistan, on a map. As for your suggestion to "lighten up," judging by your vacuous comments, if ignorance is bliss, you must be downright giddy.

While tha's true can you imagine the reactioj if hte reverse had happened; a Canadian comedy show mocked the US army like that, especially on a day where they had taken heavy combat losses? FOX News and other news stations would be on that story like stink on a monkey.

I doubt it, I think the states could really not care less about us. Most of what we do does not effect them so they dont bother paying attention, they see us like a little brother. We are cute, well behaved and smaller and some times we get in the way and are annoying but we really dont concern them. This has been made painfully clear because of the response to this 'news' cast. A couple of third rate late late night comics make some stupid comments and ignorant jokes about Canada. So what do we do, cry bitch and moan about how mean they were. Its like someone took away your lolly pop, I really dont understand why people care what the most ignorant parts of the states think about us.

Who cares?

Really?

Its embarrassing that a minister of the government of Canada responds to some nobody with a show in the middle of the night that competes with sex chat lines on a foreign news channel.

Get over it.

What other serious country does that?

Canada has a massive inferiority complex. We do this from time to time. We have to get over this and stop acting like an insecure teenager.

Please if the shoe was on the other foot (like if Rick Mercer talked about US soldiers in the same fashion), Fox and everybody down there would have caused at least as big a stink as we did.

It has nothing to do with inferiority and everything to do with respect. If Fox News had an ounce of respect for Canada, this would never have aired. When can we expect a similar piece on the Brits contributions in Iraq? We can't, because they would never disrespect them the same way they do us.

A lot of people did. This story lasted a good week in the papers. People are touchy about their soldiers. I should know. I made a couple of flippant comments in the past on this site, and boy did I ever pay.

Are you kidding? Americans wouldn't react the same way. Americans don't care. You greatly over-estimate America's interest in Canada.

Yeah, some blowhard on Fox may say something, but do you honestly believe that Hillary Clinton, Secretary of State, would make a strong statement? Seriously?

The guy is a frickin' NOBODY! Who CARES?!

All you do is give this idiot publicity.

This is like when the marines carried the flag upside down at the World Series, or when the Gore/Perot NAFTA debate and there was one caller from Vancouver as the lead on The National. It is a sign of immaturity as a country.

I like how all the people that think this video is nothing and think we are just overplaying this that they are all non-Canadian. If the shoe was on the other foot you would have been bitching just the same. Much like how that religious bitch (I forget her name who is American) was saying American Soldiers deserved to die and wanted to protest there funerals. The same bitch who wanted to come down to Canada to protest the funeral of the kid who got his head cut off in a bus saying anybody that gets murdered deserved to die.

Look how much outrage that sparked from not only Canadians but Americans as well. Hell after 9/11. Even mentioning the U.S. Military in any bad form was a big no no to the American people and it would start a big hissy fit.

In these very forums, any notion of anti-Americanism or anti-American jokes would bring a lot of hissy fits and insults from the American population that visits these forums.

The fact of the matter is, you cannot make a hissy fit about everything anti-American or jokes than whenever the other side does it you cannot say be cool and that your outrage is overrated.

For over many years Canada has never gotten any true respect from anybody for anything they do. Being a founder of peace keeping earned us no respect. Spearheading WW1 and taking all the impossible battles and winning them earned us no respect. Getting involved in WW2 and giving it our best effort and commiting to the war so much that we ended the war with one of the biggest militaries which was a accomplishment considering our population. That earned us no respect.

Everything we ever done as a nation has never earned us any disrespect. All we get is ignorance on the subject from a mostly American crowd who doesn't know shit about Canada and is mostly spoon fed pure ignorant bullshit and lies about our country. Stereo-type this, and bullshit that.

It gets tiering have to listen to all this bullshit when you don't deserve it. The fact of the matter is that this show hit a patriotic nerve with Canadians. Here we are helping America again by getting involved in Afghanistan and having a lot of losses. We are doing our best job and commiting to it fully while most nations did not. While some TV show expresses nothing but disrespect, jokes, stereo-types and ignorance about Canada and our Military and even our commitment. One person even stating he diddn't even know Canada was involved in the war. On the day four Canadian soldiers were killed.

Joking or not, they hit a patriotic nerve and further more they showing the ignorance that many Americans before them have shown Canada for there efforts.

You do not see the same ignorance from Americans to Britain. They actually show Britain respect. It's Canada they mainly show stereo-types and ignorance towards and it gets really tiering.

I don't care if they were joking or not, they sparked anger in me and in many Canadians and deserve to appologize. After watching the video a couple of times I also saw no hint of joking. All I heard were the same insults many Americans have already said in the past to put down Canada.

Americans don't react the same way? Where are you getting you're facts from because I remember after 9/11 Americans were very touchy about there soldiers and there country. Any slight of anti-americanism or troop insults and they get very touchy.

Maybe you should just go digging?

As for immaturity. You actually think that Canada has the bigger sign of immaturity as a country? ROFL are you blind? The guy asking for a appology is more immature than the guy slandering the other guy's military, police, country and war efforts?

Yeah I guess that makes sense. So if I called you a fucking asshole while you asked for a apology. By your standards I wouldn't be the immature prick, but you would be?

I'm in the army and I think people have paid far too much attention to these bozos! I wasn't bothered by it because I looked at the source, a bunch of low-rate comedians who can't get a time slot any better than 3:00am!

But thanks to the "outrage" by Canadians acting like a jilted girl at her junior prom we have given these "comedians" press that they could only dream of prior to this! Way to go Canada, you put these guys on the map.

Yeah like ignoring it helps right? Look how good that has gotten Canada for the past years. How much stereo-types and ignorance has Americans or even the American media put on that Americans have seen? Yet we ignored it and that stereo-type and ignorance keeps continueing.

Is it so much to ask for a little respect every now and then, even from fox? You think ignoring the issue is going to get anywhere regarding that? It just makes them feel like they can get away with it. Confronting the issue is better than ignoring it.

Fox canceled there show, which just shows that ignorance and stereo-types don't get anywhere.

*EDIT* Further more, are you saying Canadians should get upset only if they were popular comedians? So if Stephen Colbert insulted the Canadian Military and struck a patriotic nerve amung Canadians that he would be a valid target to demand a apology from? That makes zero sense. It doesn't matter who the comedians are. Obviously they are important enough since there episodes were leaked within hours on youtube and has been seen across Canada by now. Even enough to get fox to think twice about if there show should stay or not.

This idiot nobody on Fox who has a show in the middle of the night makes some dumbass comment about Canada, and what happens? Its all over the front pages of the newspaper. Its on all the national nightly news programs. A minister of the government feels it is necessary to respond. It is brought up in Parliament.

If anyone thinks that someone unknown blowhard on a Canadian TV channel said something derogatory at 3am about American troops would mean prompt the New York Times and the Washington Post to put it on their front page, to have it run on the CBS, ABC and NBC nightly news, to have the US Secretary of State comment and to have it debated in Congress, you do not know America at all.

A more mature country would see this for what it is - some idiot shockjock trying to make a name for himself and completely ignoring it for the insignificance that it is.

So if you called Harper an idiot on this forum, would you expect Harper to get all upset? Would you expect him to get all huffy and demand an apology?

Honestly? Because that's the analogy.

Harper doesn't care that you slag him. He's the Prime Minister. You (as am I) are a nobody.

Yet, you seem to think that acknowledging this nobody by the government is a mature thing to do.

Its embarrassing.

Does a third-rate comedian talking trash actually affect your life and well being?

Do you feel so poorly of yourself that you need the respect of others? Up until 9/11 most Canadians didn't give a rats ass about our military but now they are all "offended".

Fox canceled there show, which just shows that ignorance and stereo-types don't get anywhere.

With all the uproar raised, you've probably made these guys a fortune in upcoming comedy shows down south. Sometimes ignoring something stupid means it dies a natural death, this has only prolonged their "careers"!
