Well, as it stands today the RN has the following;

19 Frigates
3 Destroyers
4 Amphib Assault ships/Helicopter carriers
15 mine sweepers
7 Patrol ships
18 patrol boats

A few Ice patrol/survey ships

3 Regiments of Royal Marines

11 Nuke attack subs

4 Nuke bomber subs.

Again, that's the fleet today. With all due respect, I think they need a few more cuts to get to the size of the current RCN.

We're building up so they don't have to!

Mind, I hope there ain't a move to buy more used British ships....

PENATRATOR PENATRATOR:
The RN does not have anymore of those small carriers? Wow

Illustrious is being converted to a chopper carrier and they have 2 mid-size carriers being built for F35's. But they did mothball the Harriers in a bad strategic/needed monetary move.

I wouldn't necessarily call 65,000 ton carriers mid-size.

They'll be far bigger than anything other than the Nimitz-class carriers the USN uses. Most other carriers around the world top out around 35,000 - 40,000 tons or so (making theses ships almost twice a big as their contemporaries), and most don't have a real fixed wing air component, just a dozen or two Harriers. While their tonnage may have them fall into the middle of the USN's massive super-carriers and everyone else's tiny VSTOL carriers, these are closer in capability to USN carriers than everyone else's carriers.

The CVF is a midsize (medium) carrier, not quite at the super carrier mark. The approx. 80,000t full load USS Forrestal was the first super carrier in the modern sense.

The air groups will be around 40 aircraft. Closer to the French CdG than the American super carriers (80 to 100 planes).

Interestingly, while two carriers are being built, the Brits are open to selling one off (cannot afford to run two?).

I smell opportunity. :)

Oh yeah, full thumbs up from the opposition over that.

If they want to swap the thing for training time on Ellesmere Island in January (a thanks for the Upholders, then maybe)

Tell them (the opposition) that the carrier would be great for carrying aid to starving people in Africa, they'd be tripping over themselves to claim credit for coming up with the idea to buy it.

All those so called nasty things you really use a carrier for can be "secondary roles".

I think the Brits should just give it up and buy US warships built under licence. Spending all that R+D cash and ending up with second-rate warships is a waste of taxpayers money.

It only makes sense Gunny. We are wasting billions. We should engage in joint development of some ship types, and the licencing of other existing US warship designs.

The Brits should swallow their pride and buy US warships and partner with the Yanks on future designs.
