Sadly, the average person being ignorant on history, no matter what their nationality is, is a sad fact of life today. It's almost depressing on how history (and politics, but I'd put history as something much more important) is seemingly treated as some useless class in high school that you must take. Nobody consumes the knowledge. Nobody realizes how blessed we are as Canadians and Americans to have ended up in this position, and nor do they care or understand the events, the people, and the conflict that brought us to where we are.

I'm not fully sure if it's a North American thing, or if Europe is affected by this issue as well. I certainly hope not, considering Europe is literally drenched in history, both ancient and recent.

I'm looking forward to the PBS version of this. They always seem to do a good, unbiased version of historical events.

http://www.pbs.org/wned/war-of-1812/

I was well unimpressed with the recent crappy 'Sir John A' shite the CBC put out.

It was well bad and historically inaccurate with the usual pinky CBC bias, Brits bad, French good etc. Very sad.

What is wrong with the CBC?

Just show us the facts, add in accurate drama and bugger the rhetoric.

And we pay our taxes for this, but the PBS 1812 stuff will be paid for by subscriptions or donations.

Yep.

The Yanks get a great station without tax payers cash.

But you got a couple of million Quebeckers as immigrants instead. Somewhat later.

Something not well known is the part, a big part, that French Quebeckers played in the resistance to the invasion. That was a shock to the Americans who thought that Quebec, French Quebec would welcome them

So Canadians don't know about a 200 year old war that happened long before Canada even existed as a nation. Why does this surprise anyone?

Go around and ask Americans how much they know about the French and Indian War. You'll get the same result.

Not the Brits bad, the English.
The Scots did all the hard work and settling, the English went home to their castles once they got all the money.

I take it you are unfamiliar with our history too. The hard work was done by the United Empire Loyalists. Yanks that stuck with the British Crown.

QBall QBall:
The War of 1812 isn't as relevant as World War 1 or 2 to Canadians or as "sexy" as the U.S. Civil or Napoleonic wars. Hopefully this promotion will help, although I'm not sure how lasting the effects will be.

Odd to call two of the more brutal, bloodiest wars before WW1 'sexy' but I guess that's just me.

EyeBrock EyeBrock:
The whole town of Niagara-on-the-Lake is well worth a visit.

Niagara-on-the-lake is home to the oldest Masonic lodge in Canada. It was established in 1782 by the officer masons of the 8th Regiment of United Empire Loyalists. It's quite a sojourn into the 18th century to visit.

EyeBrock EyeBrock:
That's where I proposed to my missus!

At the end of shotgun, no doubt.

As mine does me. But I still make sure I'm worth more alive than dead. She's a very practical woman.

I think Europe is affected as well, but for different reasons.
It's done poorly on purpose to try and quell nationalism, which in Europe is not a bad thing.
The only exception is the German treatment of the Holocaust; I think this is still being done properly.

Drenched is the right word... drenched in blood.
