I thought the commentary provided abundant insight into the scope of the problem this community is struggling with. Same thing too many other communities are struggling with and sadly those that could make the difference grow more and more ambivalent.

It's burdened with a bunch of individuals who would have served society better had they been stillborn. What a crock of shit. There are 2300 peeople in the community, and like many 'northern' communities they sit around and do sweet fuck all except for a few .
Snowmobile, boat motor or quad breaks down, do they have small motor mechanics to fix it? Fuck no...into the lake river or bush it goes for future archaeologists to find. When the house has some wiring, heating or plumbing problems, do they call the local plumber, electrician or furnace repairman...fuck no, they cut holes in the walls, floors, build fires or just gut the house. If it's a friend of the Chief or council members they phone the government and skilled tradesman are flown in from hundreds of miles away. No community in the south of a comparable size suffers from these problems. You'll find skilled tradesmen and technicians of all stripes in a southern town that size.People who are entrepeneurs, who don't wait around for handouts.
A trucker I know, used to do the route north of the lakes in Manitoba on the ice roads with supplies and he's leave with his flat bed loaded with quads and snowmobiles that required only a few repairs. he bought them for a couple hundred of the natives and had them repaired once he got home and sold them for a nice profit.

As far as I know most of you don't know that I made the jump from the ARMY to the RCMP. I am a mountie. I am proud of that.
What you didn't know is that I am posted to La Loche. I have been here for 5 months and have been a police officer for more than 2 years.
Last night inside that hospital was the 2nd closest that I have come to using my issued 9mm S&W. Some of you may agree or disagree. Believe me or not. I don't care. I was in that hospital.
In saying this all I ask you all to realize/think of is that all police officers are just trying to ensure that everybody goes home safe at the end of the day.
Please thank your law enforcement for the work they do.

GB Ya, Bunny you keep your head up out there don't give it a second thought when you need to pull out your 9mm you pull it out and make sure you get home at the end of the day. Good work man, no one thinks this is your fault. That being said, not everyone in La Loche is against you. There are lots of people Native, Metis and White (and whomever else might have wandered up there) who you can count on to back you up. Good luck !

Mob action, native troubles. Disadvantaged and repressed minority group.
Canadians should probably be somewhat happy that natives comprise 4% of the population, not 40-50% (south africa comes to mind). One can only imagine the hapless RCMP having to deal with a mob of 10,000 streaming out of slum like dwellings to protest...on a weekly basis.

AFAIK they have all the rights of other Canadians, plus. As has been pointed out, often policing turns a blind eye to actions that would land any other Canadian in jail. Repression seems to mean that we don't give them enough extra, on top of equal rights.

Wow, I have been there too. Third world all the way. Their schools are quite good though. I lived in another northern Saskatchewan town for 30 years and never saw anything like this. It's all about LaLoche. And Gunbunny, you are right. The RCMP do a wonderful job throughout the north. They are respectful, efficient and participate in the community in many ways. Keep up the good work.
There are still some good Dene communities in the Northwest. Ducharme Village, Micheal Village and St. Georges Hill come to mind. Perhaps it's because they are still small and elders influence them. Who Knows?
By the way Gunbunny, is Dr. Nick still in La Loche?

Scape Scape: http://www.socialservices.gov.sk.ca/payment-dates Maybe if they had access to jobs and training...on a previous thread everyone's complaining about helping these people get a leg up. Now everyone's complaining (me included) that they are a bunch of welfare drunks. A few good jobs for a few people who might be good role models for the youngsters instead of all these bums might help. They set up a road block a few years back to try to get some of the mining jobs. Seems to me more people in the mines would be less people on welfare. Check this out some stats on the town: http://www.city-data.com/canada/La-Loche-Northern-village.htmlhttp://www.city-data.com/canada/La-Loche-Northern-village-work.htmlI think the second link says that only 36% of people participate in the labour force and 26% of those are unemployed. So out of 100 people 36 are working or looking for work and out of those 36 about 10 are unemployed. So about 75% of the people have no jobs.

GB Damn good work! Just don't let the powers that be let everyone off on this incident because what Thanos said on the first page is true and I've experienced it first hand and am still bitter I was told to just ignore it because "we don't want them unhappy as they might blow up like they have in the past." Translation, "they run things here so just be their bitches and don't stir the pot, look the other way on infractions but if the guy next door does it nail him!"

$1: Maybe if they had access to jobs and training
They have just as much and more access to training and post secondary education as anyone from any other community. If any other ethnicity from smaller centres in the south want to pursue trades training(including technicians too) or university, they are expected to relocate to the places where the schools are located. They do so on their own dime....and have to meet entrance requirements and standards that aren't expected or enforced for their 'northern' counterparts. While I was up north in Manitoba, Brandon University began a program called BUNTEP. the idea was to create a special program for northern teachers from the north. Special is right. What a bunch of fucking retards. Their expectations were almost nil, compared to real B.Ed degrees(which in many cases aren't much to brag about anyways) and the product that this program turned out....well...as expected. A dumbed down program for dumbasses.

Thanos Thanos: Borders on the Dene Nation. Mostly Native area so the unwritten rules on public disturbances will be going into effect. No one's getting in any trouble with the law for this one. As usual. You are very sadly mistaken......
