The NDP opposes this as being divisive? My opinion of the NDP just got lowered.

 I've got mixed feelings on this, I'm glad for the veterens who served our country in the RCAF or the RCN. But I don't like anything "royal" and I certainly wouldn't want the union jack on any flag representing Canada. We are big boys now, we don't need foreigners as our head of state, and we have a great flag. The Maple Leaf should be the only symbol of Canada. And no I'm certainly not NDP, and I'm not from Quebec. Just very proud to be Canadian

Glad to hear it's going back to it's roots. I'm not exactly a monarchy fan, but fuck, tradition is important, especially in the military. Well done.

Royal is how we started out, how we made our history and is suggestive of where we came from. MARCOM represents a purely political, financial, and institutional move. Yes, we accomplished a lot as MARCOM, but it was always with murmur of discontent that we threw away our traditions for the sake of a political move.

Frankly, not all are happy with the choice. Many Quebecers I talked to and young sailors with minimal exposure to our past are the ones that either don't care or aren't happy.

Too bad, I say. For a lot of us, we've waited a long time for this.

As if the NDP doesn't have enough issues that make the electorate think they are a bunch of retards.

I agree. The NDP has enough on it hands seeing its own leader ardently supported dividing Canada.

Times change. And these times changed over 40 years ago. The Union Jack and all the nods to British royalty were a great hallmark of a past era when Canada had still not come of age. But that era is gone and little baby Canada is all grown up now. To me, this is like saying we should all go back to dressing in baby clothes and shitting in our diapers because that's what we did in the past when we learned to take our first steps and utter our first words. Just because we did things a certain way in the past due to the realities of that era, does this make it "tradition?" Even if the answer is yes, is "tradition" some sacred cow, and we have to keep doing that way indefinitely when those realities no longer exist?

We're not a British colony or satellite state anymore and haven't been for many decades. The Union Jack isn't our flag any more. The British Foreign Office doesn't dictate our foreign policy anymore. We don't require British Generals in order to field effective combat units anymore. We don't rely on British military kit anymore (infact, with the exception of the ageing Javelin SAMs, I don't beleive we have any British kit at all). And we don't require Parliamentary Approval from British Parliament to pass a law anymore. Do we have restore all of these just because some people have dubbed it "tradition" and therefore it must endure for all time?

This will probably be more harmful to recruitment than helpful because the youth of today and tomorrow don't see value in the Monarchy or possess any kind of "Mother Britain" mentality. t's time to stop living in the past. One of the reasons you can't find many reference to Canadian troops in history books written outside of Canada is because we're always just lumped in as "Brits" and rarely described seperately.
