Obama should find a way to lay this on the Republicons - let them have what they want and let the American people see the results and who is responsible. The Democrats keep trying to put band aids on the problem. Let it bleed. Abstain from the vote, let the Repubs vote for what they want.

I'm pretty sure he already is. Last week he offered massive cuts to the three Democrat sacred cows, Medicare, Medicaide, and Social Security and the GOp still said no way. Now, Obama looks the reasonable one while the GOp looks like a bunch of petulant children who don't want to play nice.

Well, it's not like the GOPpers are capable of anything else. Petulant children? It's almost impossible to argue that isn't what they've all turned into since the 2008 election.

You have an excellent point. The message boards are lit up with people furious with President Obama entertaining the notion of touching any of the third rails of American government. These are his supporters that are threatening to work against him if he touches these programs. The GOP is letting their no new taxes mantra get in the way of an excellent oppurtunity to make some much needed reforms, and drive a few nails in the Presidents coffin at the same time. I think that the memory of President George H.W. Bush backing out on his " no new taxes" pledge [ and the subsequent outcome at the ballot box] could be a major driving force in the GOP's decision to hold fast.

Agree. I forget who said it lately, but it's true: "The Republicans can't take yes for an answer."

This is going to cost them bad come next November (barring something making the Democrats look bad by then). They are taking the side of wall street and the top 1% of people in the US over the interests of both the country and the middle and working clasess. If the Democrats have any sense (and this is the part that worries me), they will hammer the GOp on this from now until election day next year.

I would hate to be a government retiree in this day and age.Every few years we go through this B.S. of government shutdowns. Just imagine if you were dependent on that government pension to make ends meet. Your credit would be shot by now. No one would want to lend you money. Looking back, its hard to believe that we have fallen this far this fast. I remember when the Berlin wall was coming down. The cold war was ending. We were suppossed to have this huge peace dividend. For a while we actually had a surplus. It seemed the good times would last forever. It all seems like a drug induced halucination now. I am all for scaling back the Federal government, but a deal is a deal in my book. If the government promised someone a pension, keep your word. Words have to mean something. You have to be able to count on something.
