Hmmm, we have fairly new, harsher drug laws and substance abuse is already on the rise. While countries that have relaxed laws and attitudes towards alcohol and drugs see less alcohol abuse and drug use

There's a subtle, yet critical, differentiation to be made here. The title of the article was "Drinking, pot use up in Ontario: survey," not "Drinking, pot use up in Ontario."

So first off, I'm interested in who conducted the survey, in this case, The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH). You'll find that it is natural for organziations to tend to create an issue or even a crisis that refelects their own interests. A study by an association of police chief finds that crime is up. A study by a human rights group finds brutality is on the rise. So right away my skepticism alarm starts to ding.

So I thought I'd do a quick check. The CAMH report shows an increase in drinking and driving among younger drivers, and yet drinking and driving convictions have decreased, despite the fact that dirnking and driving enforcement has increased in Ontario.

Warning Flag #2. I went and took a look at the results from the previous survey from 2007. ION that case there were similar alarm bells (binge drinking up, for example). So, just due to the wide array of questions they ask and large number of participants involved, they are bound to discover a crisis in every survey. Last time it was marked increase in the number of women drinking.

Finally #3, if you look at the numbers since 1977 there is no clear break from trend here. There's been a steady, slow decline of most drinking indicators which reflects a socital shift towards recognition of the adverse effects of drinking since 1977.

And the data is from 2009--two years ago. Not much to see here folks.

Not recent? I guess that means Curtman and Mr. C haven't relocated themselves to Etobicoke in the last few days or so. 8)

I think people are more open to reporting it.

I've noticed a shift, where people are totally open to discussing their drug habits. And the drinking, not bunging but sitting on the patio enjoying the weather while having a meal is quite a regular occurrence.

35% of Ontarians between 18-34 smoke pot.

If Ontario actually stepped up efforts to clamp down, the province would bankrupt itself.

Fighting it is stupid. And from what I hear (read), Mr Ford, the conservative mayor of Toronto, is a pot head who's been arrested for possession in Florida. He's also making cuts to police personnel.

Looks to me like some conservatives are reasonable on this subject matter, now let's hope this attitude is transferred to the federal level.

I wasn't aware of any new anti drug legislation in Ontario, what was passed?

Narcotics laws are a federal matter. Provinces have no authority to pass such legislation.

But there's hasn't really been a change by the feds since 2006 when Harper took over and scuppered the decriminalization bills. People either way smoked their pot, legalized or not.

Telltale signs from Dalton are obvious.
