I'm good with that.

What rules are you talking about? If Iggy was PM and had flown to take in a show at La Scala, you'd be howling louder than the fat lady.

Probably not. I'm quite capable of reading a story and understanding when someone is following the rules set out for them.

Ruez: WHAT RULES? Will you please show me the section of the Charter that defines the rules for attending sporting events? The whole point is that there are no rules "Set out" for the PM, each PM's Office sets their OWN rules in this instance.

Did you even read the article?
$1:
PMO officials said Harper is paying for his own ticket and Rachel's and will also compensate the government treasury for the cost of a commercial flight to Boston. Moore will do the same.

The prime minister is prohibited from flying commercial for security reasons and must use the Challenger, which costs about $3,000 an hour to operate.

The junket to Boston comes as Harper has been preaching austerity in the House of Commons.

Do you read at all? What don't you get?

1) All the article says is that Harper will pay the equivalent cost of a commercial flight...nowhere does it say that there is any rule REQUIRING Harper to do that, or specifying the reimbursment forumla. More likely his staff just said "It would probably look better if we offer to pay something..."

2) Each PMO (that means Prime Minister's Office) sets its own rules regarding the PM's transportation security. So at best, STEPHEN HARPER made a "rule" declaring that STEPHEN HARPER shall only travel via government aircraft and that he shall pay the cost of a commercial ticket when doing so for personal reasons(which is nowhere near the cost of a private jet btw).

As with all the PMs that came before him, Harper wrote his own "rules" (actually that's called a 'policy' FYI, not a rule). And you think the guy deserves some kind of ticker-tape parade.

If I have to explain this in any simpler terms, I'm going to need a box of crayons and some sock puppets.

And your point is like what, Harper's the first PM or MP that didn't walk their talk?
As far as I'm concerned, it's not nearly as bad as the "official" junkets that wind up being little more than a family vacation for those involved.

And your point is like what, the since Harper isn't the first to do this sort of thing we should just shut up about it, be good little Harperites and let him carry on business as usual?

Yes, other politicians have been known to do stuff like this, but for a guy like Harper, who is always preaching that he is different from his opponents, it certainly smacks of hypocrisy.

As has been said, paying for a commercial ticket probably won't even come close to the $3000 per hour cost of flying down in the Challenger (I don't know if that price tag includes things like per diem for the crew and such). It most definitely does not set a good example, especially when he is telling Canadians to tighten their belts.

IMO, this is just another case of do as your told, not as I do - which is apparently what all politicians do, not just the left-leaning ones.

Ah for goodness sake,

He should have flown a F/A 18 Hornet instead.

Better yet, they should have commissioned an Aircraft Carrier in his honour, name it the HMCS Harper, have it dock in Boston Harbor, then take a helicopter to the game.

He should have mooched a ride in their a van and split the fuel bill with Bob & Doug McKenzie! Or used his Jew-Sith-wizard powers to teleport himself there instantaneously! Damn him, damn him to Hell! [/rumblerumblerumble]
