bootlegga bootlegga:
It's not really his fault (or that of any politician) - it's ours, simply because we don't demand more defence spending.

Perhaps I should have said it in another way, but that was the point that I was trying to make is that the media seems to relish itself in criticizing the CPC in particular, while the Liberals did not fair any better for a long time. In fact, from what I had heard, Chretien had neglected to spend in the military during his reign. Now many military machinery need replacing all at once due to that neglect in the military funding department.

Hey, I strongly agree with you that we, as Canadians, need ''increased'' military spending from our Govt. Now, whether it be the CPC that provides it, as mentionned, bureaucracy is an obstacle no matter the political party in place.

I did not ''quote'' your entire post since there is a bug on this site upon replying when the page is full. Either way, you seem very knowledgeable about military procurement and it certainly had been noticed and salute you for it too. You amongst a few others on here are a pleasure to read on military matters. Anyways, sure, the CPC needs to put military funding as a priority and stop playing politics.

Write your MP about it. If they are good about it, they'll actually give it a read and write you back. I've had some good correspondence with Joh Duncan over the past couple of years... Actually quite the straight-shooting fellow. Though I never asked him about military matters due to the fact that bringing it up would represent a conflict of interest and would go against my NDA. I've seen a few guys get burned because of that.

5 years hasn't exactly been overnight, and by the end of this it'll have been 12 years in the making. I took the yanks less time to build 10 times as much infrastructure to put a man on the moon...

Don't give us too much credit.

The San Francisco - Oakland Bay Bridge was damaged in the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake and it was said then that the structure was in dire need of replacement.

The new bridge, God willing, is supposed to open in 2013. Just twenty-four years later.

The original bridge, built in 1933-1936, took just a shade over three years to build. Much of that construction was done with hand tools and brute labor.

Three years to build in the 1930's - twenty-four years to replace just two generations later.

Ah, progress.

Is it just me or is this whole "northern sovereignty" thing the feds have been fussing about is just a joke? :?

Thanks for the link, drcaleb. I heard the news about that wikileak document.

I can't believe this country still doesn't have any warships capable of sailing through our own northern territorial waters year 'round. Heck, is our current stock of submarines even capable of surfacing through a few feet if ice?

I recall when the feds said they'll be designing and building around half a dozen armed patrol vessels that can go through our far north waters all year round, but then settled on a dozen less capable vessels that can only go up there from late spring to late fall. Does anyone here remember this?

It's hard to remember that one promise among all the other broken promises that governments have made over the decades, with respect to Arctic Sovereignty.

True enough, DrCaleb.

The "patrol vessel" subject I mentioned was on the news about a year and a half or two years back. Harper was the one who did most of the talking about it. Yeah I know, probably a little too vague in details to jog an accurate memory.

Just what other "promises" were made by the feds over the Arctic Sovereignty issue?
