Can't say I'm a big fan of Cherry, but his support of the troops is something I'll get behind him on. Nice to have someone who reaches so many in Canada say it out loud.

Kitsune_H Kitsune_H: andyt andyt: EyeBrock EyeBrock: Anybody who supports you when you are in combat is a friend andy. Even somebody like Don Cherry. What is it that you do for a living again? How is that in the least bit relevant? He needs the info to make an ad hominem attack, eh. Speaking of ad hominem attacks andyt andyt: If the troops idolize Don Cherry, then they're not as bright as we're always told Canadian soldiers are.

BartSimpson BartSimpson: I would bet money that this would apply to 95% of academics and, at the least, a majority of leftists, too.
Honor and manly character are a danger to these vermin. That's an ignorant and disgraceful comment. Academics are no different from any diverse group, whether it be doctors, fisherman or store clerks. To suggest that 95% of us are ANY PARTICULAR thing is talking out your ass! Prejudice, stereotyping ignorance. You're better than that, Bart.

EyeBrock EyeBrock: Well, you think that a profession that is grateful for support should 'get out more' if they appreciate Don Cherry.
Knowing what you do for a living helps frame your viewpoint. You have to remove the profession part. I think anybody that admires Don Cherry should get out more. If that includes soldiers, so be it.

Yes, but the fact they're soldiers is totally irrelevant. I think less of anybody who idolizes Cherry, doesn't matter what they do for a living.

Who says they idolise him? They are thankful for support while they are in combat in a shitty spot, thousands of miles away from home.
I’m no big fan of Rick Mercer but I have to give him credit for being a friend to the CF, especially those who are in an operational theatre.
Your poo-pooing of Cherry's efforts is just the same as these academics moaning about his cheerleading of our young men and woman while wringing their hands about supposed lack of inclusion of women and immigrant communities.
There are plenty of cheerleaders for wimmins groups and the diverse in Canada, not so many for our troops who are fighting a war.

You really should get out more andy. I've known Don since the days of Don Cherry's Grape Vine in Windsor. Your caustic comment shows you actually know dick-all about Don. Is Don opinionated? You bet he is, but he's also one of the few people I know that when proven wrong, he admits it and takes it gracefully. Some of his political opinions aside, Don is actually a nice guy, fun to talk to, smarter than you think, active in charitable work, loves this country, it's national sport and the young men and women who put it all on the line!

You want to focus on one particular aspect of him. And his unquestioning support is what I have a problem with. He seems to have a lot of admirers, and I think they're idiots, since he's such an idiot and a national embarrassment. What his followers do for a living is irrelevant.

I'm responding to his persona, the act he puts on. Can't comment how he is in real life. If he's not putting on an act, that's sad. I would guess he is, and that's manipulative. Basically Cherry is our Donald Trump with less money and better hair. I try to ignore him, and I see I've fallen into his clever trap, so I should just let this go.

The report quotes him as unquestioning. That's their view. They also don't like the new form of Canadian nationalism that is proud of our military. Me , I like both him and Mercer for their support of our troops in combat. I couldn't give a toss about hockey or Don Cherry, but I don't look down my nose at people who do, or those who like Rick Mercer. As an ex-servicemen that has been a few shitty places for an extended period, I can say that the support will be well received. This is another hand-wringing study of academics who mis-read mainstream Canada.

Don Cherry has become nothing but a parody of himself. He should try and dredge up the good sense to crawl off into a hole somewheres and disappear--and to take Maclean with him for that matter. This guy calls Kesler a rat--Kesler almost singlehandedly beat Nashville through grit and detmerination and the best Cherry can come with is a "rat." That just shows right there that the guy doesn't know a thing about hockey, and never did. He's just got a loud mouth.
And the way Ron Maclean went on with the Torres hit on Seabrook, you'd have thought Torres superman-punched Maclean's grandmother so hard her colostmy bag exploded. The same hit is delivered by Bickell to Bieksa later, and not a peep. And do they got a good thing say about Alexandre Burrows, who scored our overtime Game 7 winner? No, when Burrows takes a hit and is alying on the ice, he's faking it to get the major.
They're both just a couple of drama queens. Maclean should be carted back to whatever Alberta shithole he came from, just take Don Cherry and drop him over Afghanistan without a parachute. I don't care. I'm on TSN watching Fathead Mackenzie--who actually knows something about hockey.
GO CANUCKS!

Why do people put so much stock into a talking head?
He is a guy with an opinion...and opinions are like a$$holes.
Aside from his support for our troops and his comedic value, he's just another celebrity that talks far more than he should off set...
