Brenda Brenda:
Blame my ESL, but I have no clue what you are saying here :?

Okay, I'll make a simple summary.

You get charged for the amount of electricity you use because, well, it costs money to produce electricity. However, electricity is made in such amounts, that it only costs a few cents per kilowatt hour you use.

Charging for using more Internet is a joke because it does not cost more to "produce" Internet. The same goes with getting cable television. It does not cost more for a cable company, no matter if you use TV for 1 hour or 100 hours a week.

Internet providers not only want to charge a flat rate for service, like with cable television, but also charge for how much you use, like with electric companies. Why would you accept this?

Basically, would you be upset if the electric company charged you for using more electricity, when it didn't cost the electric company money to produce the electricity?

You can ask Peter to be charitable to the consumer but he is responsible to the shareholders first. I have a good idea of what that means, I think.
Cable based internet is affected by use in terms of speed (more users = slower service overall). Does it not make sense to charge for use when all are affected by large users in order to diminish that use through charges and to also use the revenue to upgrade the infrastructure to benefit all?

Isn't that what they do? They just raised prices with 6.6%, because they have to "update" their stuff. I dunno, but imho, that should have been on their budget for the past 20 years, so they don't have to do it like this...
They didn't raise it because it costs them more this year than last, but because of their messed up way of doing business.

But electricity does cost more to produce. I'm not sure where you live, so I apologize, but as the population increases, it costs more to build power facilities, operate them, and commonly, provide the fuel they need.

Internet companies only have to expand and maintain the connections, be it cable, fiber optics, or phone lines. It does not cost money to produce Internet.

The product they sell does not cost anything, but everything to maintain the product and make sure it runs smoothly does. The phone lines are already there, the cable is too, the satelite also, so basicly, it should be free with your phone line, cable tv or satelite tv.

Then again, it also doesn't cost anything to send a text, yet, depending on where you send it to, or get if from, it costs you $0.15 to 0.35/text.

I understand the production of electricity costs money. I have no problem paying for that. What I do not understand tho, is why I should be "outraged" over whatever it was he said.
Other than that, I do not have a water meter. It costs money to make clean water. How does that work then? Maybe I watch how much water I use, still, I pay the same as my neighbour, who waters their lawn 24/7/365.

Just sayin. (which was what I did in the first place, which is why I don't get what he means)

Because, in the end, Internet companies want both. They want to not only charge a flat rate, but ALSO charge usage fees. Electric companies charge usage fees, while other services charge flat rates. Internet companies want to charge flat rates...and THEN charge usage fees.

I also have a usage fee on my electrical bill tho. Oh wait, they call it "residential fee"
And then... TAXES

But isn't that the same as the phone bill? You pay a certain amount per month to have the phone, whether you use it or not, AND pay for what you use...

BC Hydro does that because Gordon Campbell is an environmental crusader. He doesn't want us using oil OR electricity.

I was just restating what DrCaleb said.

DrCaleb DrCaleb:
So then, when Shaw as a whole uses more; why doesn't it have to pay more? And since we would then be paying for usage, would throttling be lifted so the internet would once again work as intended?

I don't pay a dime more if I use my phone for 1 hour or for the entire month with Shaw. Who is your phone from?

Yeah. I can leave the phone off the hook, or connected. It makes no difference on my bill. Same with the TV. I can have 1 TV on or 4. Same price.
