Good stuff. It will reduce gasoline consumption and drive people to smaller vehciles and transit. It's all good except that the profits just flow to the oil companies. The govt need to step in here and get a piece of that action, they could use it to lower other taxes.

That's what happened in 2007-08 and it nearly killed the Big Three automakers.

You'd think they would have learned their lesson, but almost everytime I see a commercial for one of them, they are bragging about the performance of their latest SUV, Pick-up or muscle car.

Hopefully the next time they go in the toilet, our government will be smart enough to either not prop them up or just take them over and re-configure them to the realities of the 2011 and not the 20th century they seem to be stuck in.

They're just giving the people what they want. But Chev and Ford certainly have some decent small cars in the pipeline now, and Chryco would be ready to go with Fiat products.

But no, it would be good to see the govts show some discipline and not bail out any automakers.

People have said that the reason for the last recession was high oil prices, same as every other recession since OPEC started. That the Wall St and Mortgage stuff was just a sideline. So higher oil prices could certainly kick us in the pants. But the way to deal with that is be ready for it, quit winging and adapt. It's coming anyway.

But will prices crash at the end of the summer, as in 2008?

I already did - I replaced by gas-guzzling Ford for a Jetta TDI and I've never looked back.

Can Canadians import Jaguar's XF diesel? I would love one.

Good stuff indeed. When your food costs start rising because of the cost of oil I'll be sitting back laughing because I grow my own. Don't you just love people that sit on their pedestals?

No problems at all.

It has glow plugs; so all you do is stick the key in, turn it to battery power for 5 seconds and then start it. Never had a problem turning it even in nasty temperatures like -30 or thereabouts (worse with windchill).

What's wrong with a Jetta?

No, but apparently you guys don't have plowed roads and have deep snowdrifts you get stuck in, so you need a high ground clearance vehicle to get around in. In Vancouver we get the odd snowfall like that where side roads might be impassable for a couple weeks tops, but that's about it.

wow, you're totally self-sufficient in food - grow everything yourself, do you? That's pretty good, most people, even farmers, find that impossible. Anyway, not much we can do about it, the cost of oil has already risen, as have food prices. We have to learn to adapt because it's unlikely to get better. And we can't all grow our own food.

I admit that some days in winter are difficult - especially after someone with an F-350 plows through and digs big ruts in fresh snow, but after a couple of days, the snow gets packed down and the streets are no problem. After a big dump or two, the city comes along and plows it off to the side and it's clear sailing again.

Still, when the time comes for me to upgrade to a larger vehicle, I'll be moving to a TDI SUV (like the Audi Q7 maybe) instead of a gas powered minivan. The mileage will be better, the winter driving easier and the emissions cleaner. On top of that, the price of diesel is often cheaper than regular gas (usually all spring, summer and part of fall - when most people do most of their driving), so it's a win-win-win.

If someone made a hybrid or TDI van, I'd probably buy it instead (because of price), but so far, the only moderately fuel efficient large vehicles you can buy nowadays are SUVs.

If you buy a Q7, please don't come crying to me about how you pay too much taxes and raising the minimum wage will make your venti latte cost a bit more. Actually I wish you'd cut that out even when you're driving your Jetta. A Q7 starts at over 50k and the diesel version has gotta be a lot more.
