There is someone in charge. And they're professional grant writers pocketing $600 a day for their own salaries.
And you're getting fed figures by the other side who says if the land was used for high-rise condos rented at $2000 a month, they'd be getting $x therefore 'it costs'.

Same with homeless shelters. I just read about one they want to close that costs $2000/day per bed. Can you believe it? They said for $908 a month they can rent somebody a suite and include support services. WFT is going on when a shelter bed (probably a mat on the floor) costs 2k a day?

I'm all for helping the homeless and poor. But there's gotta be somebody in charge who knows the value of a dollar and how to get the most out of it. This happened during the Liberal watch, these aren't supposed to be free spending Dippers.

Ya, good luck with that.

Government people are the worst at business.

when you're spending other people's money, cost doesn't matter. This is applicable to all governments and bureaucrats, or any other organization that has access to the public purse.

This shipping container home from the so-called Zigloo Domestique project in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada is a residential home created by Keith Dewey. The home is built out of old shipping containers, and the owner chose to paint them with an industrial strength minty-green enamel, commonly found on shipping containers today, in order to maintain the container’s roots in the shipping business. While the exterior of the home may look a little rugged, due to the protruding containers, the 2,000 square foot interior of the house is quite comfortable and modern. The project cost about $150 per square foot, compared to a similar quality traditional construction project that can cost about $250 per square foot.

Which means the ones being built for these homeless women would cost only $48k insteat of 85. And since they don't need the degree of luxury seen in the picture, maybe they could get the costs down to $125/sq ft = 40k or half the price given in the article.

Back in 1997 the city of Sacramento wanted to build 3000 pre-fab 'cottages' for the homeless at a cost of $298 per square foot. Each cottage was to be 300sf.

I'm pointing that out so you folks don't feel so unique in your leftist government pissing away tax dollars on the least productive segment of society in an effort to get homeless people registered to vote with a cute 'L'.

It's pandering pure and simple.

It's a good idea to house the homeless - saves society way more than it invests in housing. But you can do it in a cost effective way. I say they should condemn some of the slumlord hotels we have in the DTES, then pay the owners a minimal amount for them, fix them up and use those.

This project is going to go ahead 'as per'. Obviously, 1/2 the cost of the $85,000 is going directly into 'someones' pocket, simply because no one has publicly spoken out against this cost. ( What the hell are you waiting for andy?)
Based on what I was able to find, in 10 minutes, on the exact same kind of construction done locally, it's also pretty obvious that 'you's' got the wrong consultants!
