Nope. What would ISAF have done?
Or what would ISAF have been forced to do? Fire on civilians protesting, probably armed with rocks, small arms and a few machetes.

Yup it's nasty, but Afghanistan has it's own police force and military. Unless the ANA or ANP asked for ISAF to roll in, there is nothing that could have been done.

Also the UN is a separate entity, if they want to leave their aid workers poorly defended that is their prerogative. Things may have changed since I was there, but the UN compounds were not adjacent to NATO bases.

Agreed, bringing troops in probably would just have made matters worse.

I dont think it would have saved any the aid workers, and would have killed several of the Afghans and injured many more. Not that I care much for people screaming for the violent death of those who have nothing to do with the desecration of their magic book. It would have put other soldiers at risk, who were dragged into a fight that they shouldn't be in.

Following the Koran burning, Maulvi Qayamuddin Kashaf, had called on American authorities to prosecute Mr Sapp as a war criminal. Hamid Karzai, Afghanistan's President, had also described the Koran burning as a "crime against religion," and called on the US and UN to take action.

Flying Spaghetti Monster will be pleased.

I guess some people didn't take to burning Korans.

I hope those that do burn Korans feel good about this too.

I was thinking the same thing.

Yes, free speech is now not permitted with regards to any inference against
the mighty all knowing and all powerful Islamic faith.

But keep drawing pictures of Jesus in all manner of styles.

It's the muzzies who need to grow the fuck up, not us.

Local residents said about 2,000 demonstrators attacked UN guards stationed outside Unama compound, seized their weapons and began firing at police.

Here is what I want to know; where the hell were the ISAF troops when this shit hit the fan?

Why should ISAF be protecting the UN? [huh]

Ask Penetrator, he seems to think so.

It's dumb-asses all the way around some worse than others.

But the pastor didn't kill anyone. Period.

Everyone has to be responsible for their own actions.

Just like we tend to view Muslims as all the same, this shows that they view all Westerners as the same too. I don't see the point of the West being there - it's not like it will be appreciated by the people we're supposedly trying to help.

Actually Andy, I did not mention anything about ISAF protecting the UN. The UN has the ability to look after themselves, however in this case it would appear they dropped the ball. Not surprising seems how the UN is full of tree hugging coom by-ya dope smoking hippies anyways. (sorta like Layton and his gang of merry men huh?)

My point was tongue in cheek, those in this country that seem to think that reconstruction can occur in Afghanistan without icky soldiers present to protect the efforts are so far out to fucking lunch. Sadly this incident proves my point.

OK - I get your point and agree. Tho I don't really want soldiers there either - what's the point of reconstructing a country by force when the people don't want us there?
