BartSimpson BartSimpson:
Recent investigations, particularly in Pennsylvania, show that women are being practically coerced into having abortions at some (not all) Planned Parenthood clinics.

Um, are you talking about Lila Rose's "sting" of Planned Parenthood? Because that didn't pan out so well for those hoping to see Planned Parenthood vilified.

$1:
The mandatory waiting time of three days is not onerous and is not a violation of anyone's rights.

Sure it is. The state is denying a woman choice over her own body by three days. And three days may not be onerous to you, but I don't think you exactly qualify for the target demographic of those actually getting an abortion.

$1:
What I'd like to see are criminal prosecutions of people who coerce women into having abortions to cover up their crimes. In California we've had several teachers over the years use the law to let them take underage girls across state lines (typically to Nevada) to have abortions and later it comes out that it's the teacher who got the girl pregnant in the first place.

Well, what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas.

Seriously though, how often does that happen that a specific law needs to be enacted? Wouldn't it have to be federal because it crosses state lines?

Several, sounds like you have a real epidemic there.

Please point out to me where I was defending anyone. I hate it when an obvious point has to be spelled out. Several criminals (as in more than two, but less than a bunch) in a population of about 37 million is not a crime wave. If a teacher has had sex with an underage girl there are laws to deal with them already.

But you knew that already!

Um, I read that story...while it took place in Philadelphia, it had nothing to do with Planned Parenthood. It didn't even have anything to do with coercing abortions.

Granted, the doctor who was arrested is a butcher who defied reasonable medical practice and killed women, but he's not from Planned Parenthood, and Planned Parenthood isn't coercing women.

The assumption here is that Women don't Think about it before deciding on an Abortion. When many women need to travel long distances just to find an Abortion Clinic, this is an onerous requirement. Add in that these States passing these "Laws" are very Anti-Abortion to begin with and it is very obvious what the purpose of these "Laws" are.

In a country like The Netherlands, the waiting time is 5 days (and you only have till 13 weeks into your pregnancy, after that, it is illegal to abort unless medically necessary), and a talk with a doctor and/or (don't know exactly if it is and or or) psychologist is mandatory. Other than that, a lesson in birth control is given too, because obviously, they lacked that knowledge.

Slowly but surely parts of the US is turning into Taliban States.

How so? The taliban doesn't allow a woman to get an education, never mind an abortion.

Religious Fundamentalists.

I didn't realize this was a religious issue. It doesn't state anything about religion in the article. I guess it's impossible for anyone but religious people to be against abortion.

andyt andyt:
We have abortion on demand in Canada, as there are no laws against it, assuming the woman can find a doctor to do it. (Many can't very easily). But I doubt if they can just waltz into a clinic and bada bing it's done. I would guess they would need an examination and then set an appointment etc. So I would guess there already is a de facto waiting period in place. Exploring options with them during that process seems OK to me.

No, there is no future appointment. Abortion clinics in Canada do provide counselling before and after the abortion, though, to make sure that the decision to have an abortion wasn't coerced (they are required by law to do this, so a law making coerced abortions illegal would be redundant and unnecessary) and to make sure the woman having an abortion is given any kind of comfort she needs afterward.

This bill isn't even against abortion...

Why does any regulation always have to be black or white? Pro or anti? I don't get it...
